My next favorite Japanese filmmaker after Kurosawa. Enormously moving, bracingly honest stories told with perfectly framed, beautifully composed pictures.

Sadly, many of his silent films are lost and many of his existing films are in poor to mediocre shape due to either poor preservation or lost negatives.

*1. Tokyo Story - A (All-time top 5, seen on film, one of the most moving films I've ever seen about the pain of life and yet there is an inescapable nobility in the performances of Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara.)
*2. Early Summer - A
3. Passing Fancy - A (moving and humorous film about how adults often fail children)
*4. Good Morning - A- (hilarious film partly about 2 boys who give their parents the silent treatment after they refuse to buy them a TV)
5. There Was a Father - A-
*6. A Story of Floating Weeds - A-
7. Early Spring - B+
*8. Floating Weeds - B+ (While there are certainly many pleasures to observing how Ozu uses color, I don't care for the slight changes to story and characters that Ozu makes in updating his film.)
*9. Tokyo Twilight - B

Own: 11 (Have the Late Ozu set and Late Spring.)

YASUJIRO OZU

Rank order:

Tokyo Story (1953)
Floating Weeds (1959)

I admire Ozu, even if I don't like either of the two films of his I've seen enough to want to watch again.

"Movies should be like amusement parks. People should go to them to have fun." - Billy Wilder

"Subtitles good. Hollywood bad." - Tarzan, Sight & Sound 2012 voter.

"My films are not slices of life, they are pieces of cake." - Alfred Hitchcock

The Lakers may have sucked this year, but at least they didn't suck as much as the Spurs.

Note that perhaps 17 or 18 of Ozu's films have been lost altogether, and therefore it would be rather difficult to have seen all of them.

An Autumn Afternoon

The End of Summer

Late Autumn

Floating Weeds

Good Morning 1/2

Equinox Flower

Tokyo Twilight 1/2

Early Spring 1/2

Tokyo Story

The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice

Early Summer 1/2

Munekata Sisters 1/2

Late Spring

The Record of a Tenement Gentleman

There Was a Father

The Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family

What Did the Lady Forget?

The Only Son

An Inn in Tokyo

A Story of Floating Weeds

A Mother Should Be Loved 1/2 (It's difficult to judge this film, as the ending has been lost; the picture runs only 71 minutes)

Passing Fancy

Dragnet Girl

Woman of Tokyo

Where Now Are the Dreams of Youth?

I Was Born, But... 1/2

Tokyo Chorus

The Lady and the Beard

I Flunked, But... 1/2

Walk Cheerfully 1/2

That Night's Wife 1/2

I Graduated, But... 1/2

Days of Youth
