The Devil-Doll is a film I'd like to see in one of those Legacy sets, fantastic film.
Lugosi was the Count Dracula for a generation of moviegoers, the film today seems slow and talky compared to other films of it's era like Frankenstein and The Black Cat, and I much prefer some of the later Dracula films, especially Christopher Lee's bloodthirsty Count to Lugosi's menacing but rather toothless vampire, still it's a must have horror classic.

I should be rewatching THE UNKNOWN and FREAKS on DVD soon so I'll be able to re-evaluate them, considering I find both slightly overrated; I'll add THE DEVIL-DOLL, which I have on VHS, as I've only watched it once. Actually, I can't believe I haven't yet watched Warners' THE LON CHANEY COLLECTION 2-Disc Set which features the LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (1927) reconstruction. I also need to pick up two other Browning/Chaney collaborations available on DVD, THE WICKED DARLING (1919) and OUTSIDE THE LAW (1920), and hope that the rest of their films - THE UNHOLY THREE (1925), THE ROAD TO MANDALAY (1926) and WEST OF ZANZIBAR (1928) in particular - will be included in the next Warners set...

George, we FINALLY agree on something.


As for Browning, whenever you read or hear about silent films there's always talk of those actors/directors who couldn't make the switch and to me Browning is the perfect example. His sounds films are so dry and dull that I've always had a hard time believing that he actually directed them especially when you look at the style of his silents. Tom Weaver done a few interviews with cast members who said they don't remember Browning directing certain films and I certainly believe this to be true.

Those interested should certainly check out some of his silents. THE UNKNOWN is one of the greatest and most shocking horror films and it remains unsettling even today.
