In order of merit:
1. The Scarlet Empress (1934) ****
2. The Blue Angel (1930) ****
3. Shanghai Express (1932) ***1/2
4. Morocco (1930) ***1/2
5. The Last Command (1928) ***1/2
6. Anatahan (1954) ***1/2
7. The Devil Is a Woman (1935) ***
8. Dishonored (1931) ***
9. Blonde Venus (1932) ***
10.The Shanghai Gesture (1941) ***
11.Macao (1952) **1/2
12.Jet Pilot (1957) **
I'm shocked to see some of the ratings given to the films of one of my favorites; anyway, it pains me to have just 1 DVD of his in my collection - THE BLUE ANGEL - and it's a pity that the Criterion DVD of THE SCARLET EMPRESS is sub-par and that their SHANGHAI EXPRESS edition seems to have fallen through.
I'm interested in watching everything he's done but especially THE SALVATION HUNTERS (1925), THE DOCKS OF NEW YORK (1928), THUNDERBOLT (1929), AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY (1931) and CRIME AND PUNISHMENT (1935).
Brook, THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN is a very good and fascinating film in its own right but, in the long run, THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE (1977) is the greater film of the two. On the other hand, though, I'd have to say that I prefer Renoir's DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID (1946) to Bunuel's 1964 version.
