Love the technique, but wouldn't place him among my favorites
1. Strike! - A (Some beautiful, moving sequences in this film, breathtaking montage, my favorite by far as it is about "regular" people rather than historical events or figures. Would rank this as my favorite Russian silent)
2. Ivan The Terrible, Part II - A- (weird mix of comedy and biting indictment of Stalin, looks great)
3. Battleship Potemkin - A-
4. Ivan The Terrible, Part I - B+ (Outstanding ending, a bit draggy in other spots, might like less if I wasn't a big Russian history buff)
5. Alexander Nevsky - B (glorious battle, but the first 2/3'ds or so are tough to get through)
6. October - C+ (some fun and/or interesting sequences showing monstrous lauging Kerensky Democrats lording it over the people, etc., but this is dry, dry stuff to get through even for a history fan.)

Interested in seeing: The Mexican films, the Storming of La Serrenz, but nothing I'm making an effort to see or have on my Netflix list.
I know what I'm gonna do tomorrow, and the next day, and the next year, and the year after that. - George Bailey
2002 Sight & Sound Challenge: 313 Last Watched: Time of the Gypsies
Last 10 Films Watched:
The Odd Couple - C / Water Lillies - B+
Foreign Correspondent - B / The Small Back Room - B+
Days of Wine and Roses - B / Redbelt - C
Torn Curtain - C+ / The Wrong Man - B+
Dial M for Murder - B+ / I Confess - A-

SERGEI EISENSTEIN
had no idea he made so many films...
Ivan the Terrible, Part Two (1958) -
Ivan the Terrible, Part One (1945) -
Alexander Nevsky (1938) - 1/2
Oktyabr (1927) -
Battleship Potemkin (1925) -
Strike (1925) -
Ranking:- Battleship Potemkin - a film that blows me away each time I see it, and I learn an immense amount every time, perfection in the silent film style of montage storytelling.
- Oktyabr - A film that I'd like to see again because it's so visually and montage dense. I'd prefer to watch it my second time with a scholarly commentary that focuses on the film in the moment of Russian history, as well as the invention of Russian history the film represents. Either that or I'd have to read up on Russian history on my own. Not an easy film, but definitely extremely dense and in its own way quite compelling
- Ivan the Terrible Part II - more fun the than plodding first part, I really don't remember too much about this one
- Ivan the Terrible Part I - Good, but I don't know the cultural history to really put the film in context.
- Strike - See comments on Ivan the Terrible. Strong visuals and montage though.
- Alexander Nevsky - yes it has a great battle scene, but damn what an enormous bore the rest of the movie was as it lumbered through the acting, dialogue and plot.
