Re: THE GREAT DIRECTOR’S CHECKLIST SERIES - Volume #8 - The Films of MARTIN SCORSESE

The Departed (2006) - 9/10
No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005) - 9/10
The Aviator (2004) - 8/10
Gangs of New York (2002) - 6/10
Casino (1995) - 8/10
The Age of Innocence (1993) - 8/10
Cape Fear (1991) - 7/10
Goodfellas (1990) - 10/10
New York Stories (1989) (segment "Life Lessons") - 5/10
After Hours (1985) - 5/10
The King of Comedy (1983) - 9/10
Raging Bull (1980) - 9/10
Taxi Driver (1976) - 10/10
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) - 6/10
Mean Streets (1973) - 9/10
The Big Shave (1967) - 7/10

I tried watching Last Temptation once but the concept didn't do much for me. I'm not that interested in "real" stories about Christ, much less "made up" (unauthorized, I guess you could say) ones. Also I have to admit the American accents really threw me.

The Departed (2006)
The Aviator (2004) 3/10
Gangs of New York (2002) 4/10
Bringing Out the Dead (1999) 8/10
My Voyage to Italy (1999) 9/10
Kundun (1997) 8/10
Casino (1995)
The Age of Innocence (1993) 9/10
Cape Fear (1991)
Goodfellas (1990) 9/10
New York Stories (1989) (segment "Life Lessons") 8/10
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) 8/10
The Color of Money (1986) 5/10
After Hours (1985)
The King of Comedy (1983)
Raging Bull (1980) 10/10
The Last Waltz (1978) 7/10
American Boy: A Profile of: Steven Prince (1978)
New York, New York (1977) 8/10
Taxi Driver (1976) 9/10
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) 7/10
Italianamerican (1974)
Mean Streets (1973) 9/10
Boxcar Bertha (1972) 2/10
Street Scenes (1970)
Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967) 7/10

My favorites are Raging Bull, The Age of Innocence, Life Stories and Mean Streets. I also have a lot of affection for New York, New York, which I somehow dig, even though I'm not familiar with the musicals it quotes. Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Last Temptation are all excellent, but I don't have very strong enthusiastic feelings about any of them. I did find the first half of Temptation tedious and badly acted, but the second half compensated considerably. I think Age of Innocence is his most underappreciated and his last two films (Gangs and Aviator) were really rather lifeless attempts at polished Hollywood glamour projects.

Overall, I think the things that strike me the most about his overall career is the inconsistancy. Very few other directors can make several all-time masterpieces and just as many misguided stinkers. But I'll be in line for his next movie, all the same, and maintain a general enthusiasm for the guy all the way.

What's A Nice Girl Like You Doing In A Place Like This? - C - Pure B&W, arty, student film stuff

The Big Shave - C+

TCM showed these tonight, unfortunately I fell asleep in the middle of It's Not Just You, Murray!, which seemed like the best of the 3 in the little I saw. I was also kind of groggy when I woke up for The Big Shave so wasn't fully open to it.
