My brother needs to complete a movie survey for his film class so please help out for the sake of cinema!!! (Please answer them all, in order, and succinctly).

1. Number of films do you watch per month in theater/ VHS+DVD, TV. How many per year?

As for the theaters, I watch about 4-5 movies in the 1st quarter to catch up on award winning movies released late the previous year; About 4-5 during the "summer movie season", just to get out of the heat; About 3-4 during the early fall when good movies start getting released again; and about 4-6 during the holiday season when the award contenders hit the screens

So that makes it: 15-20 in theater per year + ~5-10 per month DVD + TV averages out to about 100 movies/year

2. Do you watch movies alone or with friends and family?

80% alone, 15% friends, 5% family

3. Top 10 favorite films of all-time, in order. (Describe why for top 2).

Uhhhhhhh... I've never tried to compile a specific ordered list, but I can name ten movies I really, really like if that helps:

Casablanca, The Sting, Rear Window, The Road Warrior, Broadcast News, Bottle Rocket, The Big Lebowski, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Goodfellas, and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

4. What are your reasons for watching films?

90% to be entertained, 5% to be informed (watching documentaries, for example), 5% to pass the time

5. Favorite genre?

The sub-genre of crime thrillers that focuses on "Confidence Games" - The Sting, The Spanish Prisoner, House of Games, The Grifters, etc.

6. Name five feature film directors and one movie per director.

Is this part of the poll intended to compile name recognition data? I think your results will be quite skewed here at the forum. I'll list some of my favorite directorial efforts from the past ten years

In no particular order (and therefore without reasons given):
Clint Eastwood, Cary Grant, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, and Buster Keaton

I can't say I've really noticed many films being Canadian in origin, but I'm pretty sure The Red Violin, Cube, and Felicia's Journey were. I'd guess that about a half dozen explicitly Canadian films make it on my watch list each year, perhaps more.

These aren't my opinion of what the most likely worst movies ever made are; they are just the movies that I want my time back from most of all. I try to avoid bad movies whenever possible:

Happiness, Star Wars Episode I: The Phanton Menace, Volcano, Natural Born Killers, Batman & Robin

10. Name 3 popular movies for 2002 and why, in your opinion, they did so well.

Spider-Man - the source material was well liked and ingrained in the Gen X psyche; a respected director (by the target audience at least) was at the helm; there wasn't much competition at the time of release; it had good word of mouth that kept the audiences coming

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - non-threatening appealing stereotypes are presented somewhat humorously to an audience with low expectations; female audience members liked it's simultaneous messages of independence and family bonds and told their women friends to take their mates to see it; Windex bought millions of tickets to prop up their market exposure (just kidding)

Ice Age - People needed something to do with their kids; kids like shiny, noisy things; kids will ask to see shiny and noisy things multiple times; a matinee is cheaper than a babysitter; Everybody Loves Raymond

That's a whole lot of information for a survey... I should get a free weekend at a time share in Vegas or something.

Not to mention the documentaries (Allan King's, Donald Britten's, Peter Wintonick's, etc.) Come to think of it, probably closer to 50-60 (depending on the definition of 'few years').

VHS+DVD = approx 45
TV = approx 30
800-1,000 total per year

Almost always alone.

Blue Velvet - perfection at every turn, a sublime film.
A Clockwork Orange - great filmmaking and I'm always facinated by the sociological aspect of the story.

I really have no idea why certain films perform better than others. I don't have my finger on the pulse of the nation, as most of the stuff I like performs poorly. Most of the films that become popular do so because most people are lead to believe that they don't have a choice...or they don't want a choice.

a. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: impossible for it to fail—a follow on to the very successful first installment—an action and adventure film made from books treasured by the literati.
b. Bowling for Columbine: a documentary on one of America’s most controversial subjects made by one of America’s most controversial filmmakers. And very funny to boot.
c. Y tu mama tambien: a classic road trip film combined with a coming of age story and plenty of steamy sex.

Signs: well-crafted, well-written; not perfect, but perfectly entertaining.
Chicago: engagingly energetic, warts and all. Gave the Moulin Rouge crowd another film to cheer about.
Two Towers: epic and entertaining is a solid combination. A little heavy on the talking trees, but no other film reminded us more of what good cinema is all about.

1. Jaws - Probably the perfect combination of storytelling, special effects, acting, music, and visual style. I fall in love with this film more everytime I see it.

I believe films are the ultimate culmination of every creative field. You have to combine so many different creative elements to have a succesfull. It's hard, but when it's done right, you get pure magic.
