Steve,

If we don't need to have seen all the films in the brackets to vote, what exactly is our criteria in that case?

Well this is tough. Out of the 3 films I remember, Taxi Driver is easily the strongest but I did not care for Fingers at all.

Taxi Driver & Fingers - I guess

Don't remember much of Death of a Salesman & have never seen The Crowd. While GGR & Ikiru are both fine films, they are both a little overblown. Looks like a wash.

abstain

To require everyone to have seen all the films in a given set of matchups would no doubt result in a lot of abstaining. I'm providing links to the IMDB for the more obscure movies so everyone can read up on them and at least base a decision on that. For example: I haven't seen The Crowd, but from what I've heard of it, it sounds like it would thematically make a nice double bill with Ikiru. But feel free to make your own decision on whether or not to abstain.

SWEET!!! I finally got Steve's permission!

Got to do a bit of Abstaining here.

On a side note, today I came to the realization that I own quite a number of socks, but often wear two that don't match. I'm not talking a white sock and blue sock. Two white socks, just that one has red lines across the toe part, and one doesn't. That's really fucking freaking me out!

Taxi Driver & Fingers (sounds like a better match than T&L and Persona, I haven't seen T&L, but isn't the point that the women are friends shoutin' out their independence? That isn't the way I read Persona at all and don't see them as much of a match.)

Ikiru and The Crowd (unless there is a prohibition against voting for our own nominees)
