The cheapest MiniDV camcorders run around $350 to $400 (they have come down quite a bit over the last two years).

Normally, I'd say to be sure to get one that can record from an analog line input jack, but that might not be as important given that the camcorder's for an 8-year-old.

MiniDV is now getting into affordable 3CCD cameras. I was looking at the Panny model with 3CCDs, but settled with the Sony TRV22. I'm happy with my decision. The pic quality is excellent (that of DVD or better) and my friend, whom is heavy into art, film, etc, etc, was amazed at the low light shooting quality this cam has.

Retail: ~$650.

Mr. JBL has made my first home theater possible.

Tom,
My wife purchased the Canon ZR70MC for me as a wedding gift a few months ago.
I love it. We loved it in Hawaii.

Currently dropped price of $599.
Well worth it.

I would also recommend the Sony TRV22. I paid about $590 for mine early last summer. The picture quality is excellent, it performs well in low light, is very light and compact, and is simple to operate.
