Can digital camcorders be used as webcams?

Can the recent crop of digital camcorders also double as a webcam via their USB 2 or firewire ports?

I would like to get one and the dual use would help justify the cost.

Thanks!
Jeff

I have an old 2nd generation JVC DV camcorder, and I can use it as a webcam, however, its captured using a Dazzle USB Video capture device rather than directly form the camcorder...

The newer Sony camcorders has software that does that. I haven't tried it but I read some poeple actually using it thru the USB connect.

I've used my firewire-equiped MiniDV camera with my Mac, using iChat AV. So videoconferencing works. Haven't tried a webcam sort of thing.

Luckily, right at that moment, an unconscious Argentinean fell through my roof.

He was quickly joined by a dwarf dressed as a nun.

Another option is to plug the analog video out of any video camera into the analog video in of a video capture/TV tuner card.

Thanks guys I guess it looks like it is possible I will just have to look very closely at the camera specs. I don't have a Dazzle box or a video capture card so I was hoping that a straight USB 2.0 or Firewire connection would work.

Thanks!
Jeff
