Can I backup my DVD-Audio discs?

Is there a robust program that is say no more than $100 that will allow me to make a copy of my DVD-Audio discs for backup?

Re: Can I backup my DVD-Audio discs?

I don't believe there is anything that will legally allow that....

elaboration: something that would support a multichannel rip is what I think you are asking for and that is what I meant. There is something from imtoo.com that let's you rip to various formats that is less than $100.00

I only need 2 channel. Backup copies are legal.

It is not legal to defeat digital copy protection to copy a DVD-A. There is no provision for making back up copies despite the claim often repeated on various forums. Read the DMCA if you have any questions. If no digital copy protection is used, it is legal.

The legality varies from country to country, but the US is not one where defeating digital copy protection is legal.

Let's refrain from giving legal opinions, especially when they may conflict and we aren't lawyers.

There's currently a conflict between the case law of the U.S. Copyright Act (which allows making a backup copy of a copyrighted work) and the untested laws known as the DMCA in this regard.

My understanding is that the Copyright Act allows for backup copies.

Some of the Oppos (971D) will transmit a 192 Khz signal over coax or toslink. Perhaps you can record from that?

Re: Can I backup my DVD-Audio discs?

Many discs are watermarked, and even if you do manage to decrypt the DVD-A's cryptography (not impossible, but outside the bounds of this forum), the resulting backups will not play in any DVD-A player that detects those watermarks.

The DMCA makes no provisions for digitally copying a copy protected digital recording in the US. As it stands now, the Copyright Act allows for making direct digital backup copies of digital recordings that don't uise digital copy protection. If somebody assumed that the Copyright Act prevents a law from being passed that limits copying of protected property, I would like to see the provision of the Copyright Act that states that. Recording the analog output of a DVD-A is legal even when the recording uses digital copy protection.

The question you asked, "Can I backup my DVD-Audio discs?", can be answered simply, not legally in the US, read the DMCA. The law may be untested, but it isn't unclear, and my personal opinion is that it is unlikely to change. Consumers have the right to not purchase DVD-A, Blu-ray or you name it that uses such restrictions. Rights owners can provide for managed copies, but I don't recall that ever being used with DVD-A.

Chris
