Some U2 Remasters. Finally!

It's looks like U2's back catalogue is slowly but surely, getting remastered.

First, we had the Joshua Tree remaster re-release.

Now, u2.com states that the first 3 albums have been remastered and will be released on July 21st.

U2.com | Official News

I've always found U2 CD's sound quality to be average at best.

Let's hope the rest will follow. ASAP!

Re: Some U2 Remasters. Finally!

I've been waiting at least a decade for a remaster of these CDs. I really look forward to the early releases as I never picked them up. I found their original release of 'War' and 'The Unforgettable Fire' to be quite tinny in sound quality and thought that it would only sound worse for the earlier ones. I'll definitely be picking these up.

I would LOVE an Actung Baby remaster!

Be careful what it is you ask for ;-)

Seriously, AB is a great sounding disk as it is. I am not sure what they would do to improve it.

Having said that, I thought the JT RM sounded pretty damn good, but so did my original JT; improvements were somewhat subtle.

You think AB sounds good?

I know to a degree it's intentional, but to me, the whole album sounds like it was recorded with microphones covered in woollen blankets. In fact, that's how all the U2 CD's sound. JT is the best sounding one by far.

That's not what I said. I said I think AB sounds GREAT, not good ;-)

The opening drums on Zoo Station are intentionally distorted. After that, I think it sounds fantastic. Solid bass and drums throughout. This is a stellar recording. Bono's vocals and various other sounds are processed, but as you said, that was intentionally.

Having said that, my views are probably slanted by the fact that I also consider AB to be their best album musically, bar none. I like JT, but to me, U2 hit their peak on AB, with a few echos of it on Pop and Zooropa.

Was it in the liner notes for the remaster of JT where there is a quote from Bono or Edge that says something to the effect that the sound of AB is the sound of 4 guys chopping down the Joshua Tree?

Anyway, not to belabor the debate. Its U2. Its all good.

I agree with you Darren...I know that stylistically, it's supposed to sound kinda midrange-y but I do feel that they could do some work on the top-end a bit.
