Syd Barrett Has Died at 60
From the AP
Quote:
LONDON (AP) -- Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.
The spokeswoman - who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement - confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death.
Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd with fellow Cambridge student Roger Waters in 1965 and wrote many of the band's early songs.
He got the name of the band from two old blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Pink Floyd's jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene. It was the first British group to do light shows in concert and its music and style was weird even for that era.
The 1967 album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" - largely written by Barrett - was a commercial and critical hit. The group, with additional band members Nick Mason and Richard Wright, came to be known as England's premier acid rockers.
But the band did a turn for the worse when Barrett became mentally unstable from the pressures of drugs and fame and had to leave the band in 1968 - five years before Pink Floyd's most popular album, "Dark Side of the Moon."
Barrett spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge.
Guitarist David Gilmour, another Cambridge student, took Barrett's place.
A small, private funeral would be held, the spokeswoman said.

Very sad. Pipers is still one of my favorites and is a psychedelic classic in my book.

Re: Syd Barrett Has Died at 60
Very sad indeed. Syd is one of my favorite musicians of all-time, and is one of the most influential guitarists ever. Rest in peace you crazy diamond.
I hope that every one of you who bought the PULSE DVD today brings it out and plays Shine On in tribute to Syd.

"It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm much obliged to you for making it clear that I'm not here."

We "Wish You Were Here". He was a great musician who's career was cut way too short. I'm sure that mental illness is a terrible thing to have to go through. He should finally be able to rest in peace.

Re: Syd Barrett Has Died at 60
Just recently read A Saucerful of Secrets and was a little depressed about Syd, and now this. RIP, Roger (he apparently dropped 'Syd' after his Floyd days and went by his real first name).

And you believe, at heart, everyone's a killer...

Re: Syd Barrett Has Died at 60
I don't consider myself a Pink Floyd fan (the SACD of DSOTM being my only PF title - and I like it a lot). Never listened to Syd's music, but his life has always intrigued me. With that in mind, I am kind of bummed out after hearing about Syd's passing. I am going to pick up "Pulse" and make a toast to Syd....hope you are finally free of your demons.
RIP, Syd....WYWH

Re: Syd Barrett Has Died at 60
I think it's sad when any human being is prevented from reaching their full potential. Syd was young but he had loads of charisma and talent and seemed fearless, maybe too fearless. I'm sure that others in the band did the same substances that he did but were fortunate to have gotten through unscathed. But all that is history. Rest in peace, Syd.
BOB DYLAN BLUES
Got the Bob Dylan blues
And the Bob Dylan Shoes
And my clothes and my hair's in a mess
But you know I just couldn't care less
Gonna write me a song
'Bout what's right and what's wrong
About god and my girl and all that
Quiet while I make like a cat
'Cause I'm a poet
Don't you know it
And the wind, you can blow it
'Cause I'm Mr. Dylan, the king
And I'm free as a bird on the wing
Roam from town to town
Guess I get people down
But I don't care too much about that's
'Cause my gut and my wallet are fat
Make a whole lotta dough
But I deserve it though
I've got soul and a good heart of gold
So I'll sing about war in the cold
'Cause I'm a poet
Don't you know it
And the wind, you can blow it
'Cause I'm Mr. Dylan, the king
And I'm free as a bird on the wing
Well I sings' about dreams
And I rhymes it with seems
'Cause it seems that my dream always means
That I can prophesy all kinds of things
Well the guy that digs me
Should try hard to see
That he buys all my discs and a hat
And when I'm in town go see that
'Cause I'm a poet
Don't you know it
And the wind, you can blow it
'Cause I'm Mr. Dylan, the king
And I'm free as a bird on the wing
