Re: Bands you discovered/liked before they made it big?
U2-right away, when Boy came out. although October was the first of theirs that i actually owned.
REM-when Murmur was released. saw them the first time later that fall.
George Thorogood-his first three albums are outstanding, and then he did that I Drink Alone song that made him huge, and now I can't stand him.
lots of bands who I consider big/successful, but probably really aren't in the grand scheme of things. The Waterboys, the Silos, Hoodoo Gurus, etc.

Re: Bands you discovered/liked before they made it big?
If having Kill 'Em All counts as knowing Metallica 'before,' I guess that'd be the first I could count.
Knew The Urge when they were just forming.
Knew Wilco before Uncle Tupelo split into them and Son Volt.
Knew Gravity Kills before they got their big break on the 'Se7en' soundtrack.
Remember when the sign for the Nelly debut album launch party went in the window at the Streetside down the block.

Re: Bands you discovered/liked before they made it big?
I liked Gravity Kills' first album a lot, but they just went to crap after that. Very disappointing. I knew about them before Se7en also, but didn't consider them to really have done anything significant besides that basically.

I saw KORN at a bar in Toledo, OH. and the only security was the bar owner in front of the stage trying to keep people from the getting too close.
and for what it's worth, i saw (and stood right in front of) Travis Meeks and his new Days of the New band, in a small bar, obviously toward the end of his downward spiral from crystal meth.

Re: Bands you discovered/liked before they made it big?
Definitely. Metallica didn't get big until Master of Puppets, and they didn't get BIG until the Black album.
Speaking of which, has anyone actually topped Master of Puppets yet, or is it still the greatest pure metal album of all time?

Re: Bands you discovered/liked before they made it big?
IMO still the greatest pure metal album...
And unfortunately one that I've discovered is missing from my CD collection. You know how it is when you have over 600 CDs and you change apartments 10 times in 16 years (dating back to college years)? Somewhere along the way, my Master of Puppets disappeared (along with Aerosmith's Pump). As I was burning songs to my iPod, I wondered why those songs weren't on there yet, as I knew I owned both CDs, but when I dug through my CD collection, they're gone.

Re: Bands you discovered/liked before they made it big?
Well, I'll pitch in a couple..... In 1976, a friend bought an album of an unknown group and we began to play it at parties. Everyone really loved it and we all agreed that it would be BIG.... it was "Boston"...
In 1979, I was on vacation in Florida and while walking on the beach at midnight one night, I ran into a group of gals and guys who were heading to a holiday inn for a late party, and asked me to go. A little known band who were playing locally were there partying with us and during the night, a couple of the members broke into a sing along of "New Orleans Lady".... the band was LeRoux.... they hit it big the next year........

I found this new cd coming out and gave it a try and loved Nora Jones. About a month later, she was a national hit.

Re: Bands you discovered/liked before they made it big?
Went to a concert with Mott The Hopple being the first warmup, Flash Cadilac and the Conn. Kids 2nd and the main draw was West,Bruce and Lang. Mott The Hopple blew everybody away and we could care less about the rest of the concert. Went the next morning to find an album and nobody had any and couldnt figure out why everybody that was coming in was looking for them. Must have been the early 70's.
