Re: VH1's "Rock Honors", tributes to Queen, Kiss, Judas Priest & Def Leppard
Actually, I don't think Augeri was in a Journey cover band. I think at the time Journey contacted him, he was out of the music business after his band Tall Stories called it quits.
There was a rumor that Hugo was considered as a replacement. If you've never seen or heard Hugo, then you'll be shocked when you do. I can't find his old website, but here's an interview with him.

It's scary how similar he is to Perry, even moreso than Augeri! He's also in a Journey tribute band, Evolution. Here's their myspace site...

So a red tank top is considered "flamboyant?" Ok then.
Did you ever stop to consider that what he wears on stage has less to do with Queen and more to do with his girlfriend designing them and Paul wanting to promote it?
As far as the "fashion contest" bit, I wasn't the one bringing up his clothing in the first place. It seems to be a bigger deal to you than, well, anyone else.

And, I never said anything about his vocal style. Paul is one of the best blues/rock singers there is (Free, Bad Co, The Firm), but he can't emulate Freddie Mercury in that regard because he doesn't have the range.
I never thought he was a good fit with Queen, and seeing him with them on the Rock Honors special did nothing to change my mind as far as that goes.
|
So who *would* be a good fit with Queen then? Off the top of my head I cannot think of a quality rock singer who can handle soft AND hard stuff, that is NOT someone who would be considered a Freddie imitator and has a great stage presence.

OK, so he is whipped then.

There was a thread here a while ago which you obviously know about. Two suggestions that came from other people are George Michael and Gary Cherone. I don't know about Cherone, but George Michael would have been a better fit than Rodgers. I've also seen Rob Thomas mentioned as a possible good fit too. I am obviously not the only one who thought Rodgers and what's left of Queen weren't a good fit.

If Paul and Brian have indeed called it quits, then I think they are both better off.
If it's not worth waiting until the last minute to do, then it's not worth doing.

People mention George Michael all the time and yet always fail to give valid reasons as to why a fluffy pop singer would fit in with a rock band as opposed to someone who is a legit rocker. Rob Thomas would be good if you wanted everything to sound incredibly boring.
As for calling it quits, I have seen nothing from Queen or Paul that would suggest their collaboration is over.

I'm going to assume that you haven't seen the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert from '92, when George Michael performed with Queen. He really blew people away. I remember being totally shocked at how good he was.
IIRC, he never toured with Queen because he wasn't as good at the harder rocking material.

I read a piece at melodicrock.com that suggested it might be, but it isn't anything official.

BRIAN MAY NOT SO IMPRESSED BY IDOL EDITING:
It seems Queen guitarist Brian May isn't so impressed with the editors of American Idol. The band made a special appearance last week for the show's Queen theme night.
But selective editing of the contestant's time with the band left May less than impressed.
This from his website "soap box" section: "There was never a plan for us to perform on the AI show. We only wanted to do the coaching thing, (done at our sound-check in Anaheim), to give as much as we could to the participants ... ... not go into the TV studio and 'advertise' ourselves ... I'm happy about that decision.
We DID send a great supportive message to the kids, but really we're happy that this was private too ....
We all send our commiserations to Bucky ... we all liked him a LOT.
As regards 'low blows' - yes I do feel that the show delivers a lot of these, now I am able to see it at close range ... it's disturbing. Thanks for the supportive letters to me, folks ... I have indeed lost a bit of sleep over the whole thing ... but now it's time to move on ...."
Brian May also commented on the end of the Queen + Paul Rodgers tour: "Our last show tomorrow of the tour ... in Vancouver .... it's a strange feeling .... it's really felt like a family out here on this leg .... I'm going to miss the feeling of belonging, and the roar of America. Big thanks to all who have supported us in the last few weeks .... it has been a very emotional homecoming for us."
Future plans for the band are apparently under discussion as is the involvement of Paul Rodgers. Early whispers suggest that the successful pairing has run it's course for now.

Of course I saw the concert but I find it rather amazing that, on the basis of a whopping three songs, some people would claim he'd be a great singer for the band.

Which is basically what I've been saying all along. He's about as much of a rock singer as Michael Jackson is a womanizer.

As Brian May is fond of saying, reporters will say pretty much whatever they want without any basis in fact.

You have to admit, though -- he really nailed those songs!

Yes, except for "39" when he bungled the lyrics.
