Buyer Beware: Franz Ferdinand DualDisc

Some online retailers, such as Amazon, are advertising the DualDisc version of the new Franz Ferdinand CD You Could Have It So Much Better as having 5.1 Surround on the DVD side. It's not true. The disc packaging says it is "Enhanced Stereo", whatever that is. It's certainly not Surround and it's not Advanced Resolution/DVD-A/SACD. My Denon player identifies it as LPCM 2.0.

I bought the disc a few days ago as well, and while it isn't in 5.1, the "wnhanced stereo" mix is really quite nice. Much better than the CD side. My DVD-A player shows that the album on the DVD side is encoded at 48k/16 bit.

The only thing that kind of irritates me is that all of the video footage is contained in a kind of matted/window format (not letterboxed). Almost like a window within a window. Why they did this is beyond me.

Cheers!
Harry

Very interesting! Thanks for the info. My Denon player doesn't show the bitrate, but my Pioneer one does. Didn't think to check it on that one. I did notice the sound was better on the DVD side. I just wish the retailers would stop advertising it as Surround.

Yeah, the matted video thing is annoying. Luckily I only watch those once.

Why would the 16/48 version on the DVD side sound any better than the cd? Less compression?

Depends on just what "Enhanced Stereo" means, I guess...

Maybe it should say "somewhat, well barely enchanced stereo lite"?

Rachael, the big disc cat! I used to be looking for Hi-Vision Laserdiscs & D-Theater tapes, now I'm looking for HD-DVD's and Blu-rays.

I survived the AFI top 100 Film Challenge! I've seen them all.
