DualDisc confusion...

Ok, so I'm all moved into my new house and finally have my equipment squared away and have started listening to my DVD-A and SACD discs. I guess everything is going to DualDisc now? I am somewhat confused because as I strolled through Costco last night, I saw the new Springsteen album in DualDisc.

The problem is that the label states something like CD on one side and DVD Surround Sound on the other. What the hell is that supposed to mean? Is the DVD side DVD-A/MLP? SACD? What?

Also, I have a hard time finding an internet retailer that actually has detailed specs on what's on the DVD side.

Am I just missing something?

Sony/BMG discs like Bruce have low-res stereo and lossy Dolby Digital Surround on the DVD side.

Universal or Warner discs like Nine Inch Nails have high-res stereo and high-res surround on the DVD side.

EMI doesn't seem to be releasing anything yet.

Ah, ok...So the DVD Side is basically a DVD-A disc?

Be aware that the "CD" side of Dual-Disc does not conform 100% to the redbook CD specifications, and therefore cannot carry the official CD logo. Many people have reported compatibility issues when trying to play the "CD" side in car CD decks or computer CD-ROM drives.

Another brilliant idea brought to us by the music industry.

That's my question. Does it conform to either of the SACD or DVD-A specs? I have the new NIN disc, but haven't tried playing the DVD side yet.

Depends on the title- the NIN disc is DVD-Audio, in fact it mentions it in small print on the label outside the shrinkwrap. Titles on any Sony label aren't DVD-Audio since Sony is behind SACD (yet they won't release these titles on that format!) and have the album in PCM stereo (which is supposedly slightly higher-resolution than PCM on CD) and sometimes Dolby 5.1, though not all of their titles do. It seems like it would be more worthwhile to focus on video content if they're not going to include DVD-Audio.

The DVD Side conforms to the DVD specification if that is what you are looking for. The CD side does not.

I was actually refering to the high-resolution audio on the DVD side. I just noticed the DVD-A on the side of With_Teeth.

How about The Downward Spiral (Dualdisc...not SACD Hybrid), I was thinking if picking that up as well.

I think it's confusuing as well. Do be aware that not all of the Dual Discs contain surround sound (in whatever format) on the DVD side. For example, the Velvet Revolver DVD side has the album in PCM - not 5.1
