OK.. last I checked a band/musician/performer didn't own the songs on their CD (property of the label) and didn't have a say in what commercials they are used to hock. HOWEVER, in a similar note ... my favorite bits are commercials that use music that has nothing to do with the product
Example: Iggy Pop's Lust for Life, his ode to heroin addiction being used to sell cruise ship tickets !?!
But if anybody can be called a sellout, its performers who have entire songs that serve as commercials. I don't have to name any names but *cough*Cough*Nelly*cough*cough* and his hit Air Force Ones is probably the most well-known recent three minute rap commercial.
"Did you know that more people are murdered at 92 degrees Fahrenheit than any other temperature? I read an article once. Lower temperatures, people are easy-going, over 92 and it's too hot to move, but just 92, people get irritable."

Yeah. I know neither is capitalized.

Did you check what the songwriter's role is in those decisions?

This isn't true. It all depends on the artist, and whether they are the songwriters, and if they are, how their deal is set up. It is the label/publisher's job to exploit the music to the best of their ability, which includes licensing it for TV, film or ads. Whether the artist has a say also depends on their deal.

In general, I have a bigger problem with acts that change their music in order to be more commercial and to increase their bank accounts, especially when they used to be anti-establishment
|
The biggest problem I have are the artist that back in the day yelled loudly they would never sell out who eventually did. Neil Young, Bob Dylan etc...these are the guy's who started the whole sell out thing to begin with but I guess like their music changes so do their opinions..$$$$

Then what's the case for Nexium(or one of those other drugs) using the overture from Tommy? Pete Townshend signed off on that?

I think these people came into the business with high "artistic ideals" then realized after a few decades that "hey, this is a business". Maybe getting lots of bills and seeing where the checks were coming from helped them realize this.
People act like it's a "bad thing" or somehow "compromises artistic integrity" that music is bought and sold. It's just the way it is, folks.

It's the principle and integrity of the original piece that the singer is fighting for. He didn't want to castrate the song and become a whore. I respect him for that. To take a song about thrusting an ignorant college kid into the atrocities of Cambodia to see what a tough life really is, really shouldn't be used to sell jeans.
|
And maybe some of the people who would hear the song on a jeans commercial would like the sound of the song and seek it out, thus exposing more people to the original message. I don't see using the song in that way as "castrating the song and being a whore" at all, I think it's brilliant. Like using "Fortunate Son" to sell something (I can't remember what) a year or so back. The message of the commercial was absolutely opposite of the message of the song. I thought the irony was delicious.
I know interest in Mingus went up sharply with the use of his music in VW commercials. Mingus is no longer with us, but I have to say I don't think any less of his brilliant music for it being used in a commercial.

Mingus was used in a car commercial? I don't remember that (I manage to avoid commercials for the most part).
Do you happen to know which song they used?
