Looks like a possible big win for the new BluRay format:

Also it appears the BluRay Disc Association formally launches today.

Thus ends the old '20th Fox to support HD-DVD' rumor.
Now to sell a kidney to buy a Qualia projector, a Blu-Ray player, a SVS B4 subwoofer, and constructa six seat "theater" out in the boondocks.
"Did you know that more people are murdered at 92 degrees Fahrenheit than any other temperature? I read an article once. Lower temperatures, people are easy-going, over 92 and it's too hot to move, but just 92, people get irritable."

Well we might want to be careful about Fox support of HD-DVD...my understanding is that they may have a seat still on the DVD Forum.
I'm also reading conflicting things about whether Fox has made a full commitment to release movies in the BluRay format. In any event, this clearly builds momentum for the format.
My hope is that we avoid another terrible format war by focusing all energy on one new standard. It seems to me that no one wins a format war.
If you buy that Qualia (I have seen it in action and it is mindblowingingly good) please invite me over.

What I read was that Fox are on both fora to judge which one will "win-out" or if they can peacefully co-exist.
Quote:
Mr. O'Neill said discussions with the Blu-ray association were just beginning, and Fox hadn't picked one format over the other.
"We're very excited about exploring both formats at this time. We see them both as very excellent candidates," he told reporters on Monday after Blu-ray Disc Association's news conference

Thanks for the link Paul. They seem to be sitting on both sides of the fence.

Sounds like they're hedging their bets by endorsing both formats.
Seems like the format war is still on.
EDIT: Actually, is this really a topic for the Music forum? We've discussed it here before - but that was in relation to hi-rez audio possibilities.
Fox endorsing either format really has nothing to do with music.

Marc,
I'm afraid you may be right. Seems this is only slightly positive since Fox was on HD-DVD only before and they hav added BluRay now. I wonder if this equates to more momentum for BluRay.
God help us from another format war.

It is damned ridiculous that these movie Blu-Ray threads keep spamming up the music area.
This is not relevant to this area.
Plus, we already have existing Blu-Ray threads in this forum that could be replied to instead of adding new off-topic threads.
 two thumbs down.

Chill out Mike. You visit here often and now we have been discussing BluRay for many months here, in fact to my knowledge more often than in the Film forum cept for Ron's recent BluRay demo thread.
This may impact music so I think it is relevent.

I agree that this is the wrong forum but at least it's not as bad as the two dozen page long Blu-ray thread at AVS which is in their digital projectors forum. I've requested for it to be moved to a more appropriate forum several times but they don't care either.
As for Fox supporting Blu-ray, that's great news. We all know Blu-ray will win in the end and it's great that Fox will be amongst the earlier studios to provide nice Blu-ray movies.

A repeat of my post in A/V Sources:
There has been no such announcement that Fox is adopting the Blu-Ray standard. I received the following from Video Business, which merely states that Fox has joined the Blu-Ray board of directors. Please carefully read the final sentence...
Quote:
|
Fox joins Blu-ray board of directors. Twentieth Century Fox is expected to announce Monday that it has joined the board of directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group promoting one of two competing hardware standards for the high-definition DVD. The involvement of Fox gives Blu-ray its only major studio presence outside of Sony Pictures, whose parent company developed the format. Fox officials stressed over the weekend, however, that the move does not represent an endorsement of Blu-ray or a commitment to release titles in the format.
