Dual-Disc?

Sounds that it could be that way Kyle. No mention of DVD-A so I was wondering if it just may be a hi-rez DVD-V mix. It said I think Nov. 16 so I guess we'll see. Personally I hope it is not a Dual-Disc. I have not intention of buying these and being a guinea pig to see if gets stuck in one of my players (either home or car). If it is I may wait as I have 2 of his DVD-As and may see if they do some more individual albums or perhaps even C,S,N and Y on DVD-A? Between what Warner and Sony are sitting on in their music catalogs for potential hi-rez releases makes one wonder whether they are that committed to their formats.

From what I've read, Neil is enamoured with the highest sampling rates. Is 96k enough for him? That's the highest dvd-video can go, correct? 24/96? Or is it 16/48. Crap, I can't remember.

Kyle, I believe the std. DVD-V is 48k. DADs were 24/96. Here is a source that spoke to the Warner guy and claims not a Dual-Disc and not DVD-A:

Also, it is not a hybrid disc. Not sure about the entire catalogue.

It's a nice selection, though I wish he could of grabed a track or two off his debut, S/T'ed album or maybe a gem or 2 from the Buffalo Springfield days. Hell, that's the group that jump started him. His career girth has grown. He has so many good songs that it's damn hard to pare them down, I suppose... ...and please everybody!

Rachael, the big disc cat! I used to be looking for Hi-Vision Laserdiscs & D-Theater tapes, now I'm looking for HD-DVD's and Blu-rays.

Perhaps it will be like some of his other DVD-As, stereo only, at 192khz. So many people who work in this business seem to have no clue about the actual product, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Warner guy said it wasn't DVD-A just because it doesn't have a M/C group.

Paul, I would hope that a spokesperson for Warner would know what a DVD-A is. Between their support for DVD-A and Sony's for SACD its little wonder these formats have remained a niche market.

DADs are just dvd-video discs with audio only. I suspect this new album will be a DAD with 24/96 stereo tracks on the dvd-video side.

Or the guy at the label may not know anything and this will be a dvd-audio disc like Neil's other albums.

Neil's earlier Stereo only discs were labeled "DVD-Stereo", so this should be along the same lines. Not sure if using the DVD-A moniker requires inclusion of a multichannel track. Anyway, can't wait to pick this one up along with the new Queen disc when they are released.

"Regular" dvds can contain up to a 96kHz sampling rate (stereo only). That's why quite a few dvd-audios have LPCM* tracks on them so they can be played on standard dvd-video players. IIRC only a few of the very first dvd players weren't equipped with 96/24 convertors.

* linear PCM (i.e. non-MLP/non-compressed)

OK, picked this one up yesterday... GOOD GOD A TOTAL WINNER!

I was a bit disappointed early on to learn that it would be 24/96 only, but it really does sound fantastic. And I wonder if this is a better model for hi-res music?

I know, I know... no surround. I'm sure it would be interesting, but that would be purely icing for me. I still prefer stuff that was originally 2-channel in 2-channel, with some exceptions none of which include any of the Neil Young!

And this disc boasts my favorite animated screen shots. Usually, I turn off my monitor as soon as I've got the disc playing, but I love, love, love these graphics! I'd describe them, but they were such a wonderful surprise that I think I'll let you discover them yourselves...

So, does anyone think this sorta "DAD" disc, playable on every DVD player whether or not it has DVD-A encoding, is a better choice for at least some releases? Do you think this disc will be appealing to those without DVD-A players? I'm not sure, and I confess that I sorta wonder what a 24/192 sample rate would sound like...
