hey ya'll,
searched around and found this thread. i'm very excited because i went from owning:
-REM's Automatic DVD-A
-Titanic SACD
-Star Trek Nemesis SACD
-Norah Jones SACD
-Pink Floyd DSOTM SACD
to adding the following (just within the past week!):
-AI DVD-A
-Dire Straits BIA SACD
-Timeline SACD
-Phatom of the Opera SACD
-Great Train Robbery SACD
-Legend of Zorro SACD
-Film music of Jerry Goldsmith SACD
-E.T. SACD (20th Anniversary)
the high-res titles that i own MUST be multichannel mix. there are some rolling stones and miles davis stereo CD's that i have borrowed from the library as well as a few others i can't remember now that i have played back comparing SACD stereo vs. CD stereo and my ears aren't good enough to detect the difference. to me, they're 1&the same. so i don't see myself going out of my way to buying SACD stereo versions when stereo versions are a lot cheaper used and much more available than SACD's. that's why if i own a SACD, it MUST be a hybrid (cause i can't play SACD-ONLY layers in my car and computer and so on, so CD layer is still required) AND must be multichannel.
the ones i have i'm fairly familiar with, but i recently remembered that there were a lot of wish list items that i wanted to get that i found on amazon.com used for VERY cheap prices! some $4, 5, 7, 11 delivered!!! that's awesome. anyway, i splurged and increased my collection greatly =D.
first disc i listened to was Brothers in Arms. it sounds sooooooooooooo good and milky! i was used to the regular CD version but this mix had different "timings" in certain places, some ques were slower some had more 'presence' but overall it really rocked BIG TIME! even when i play it back in my car compared to the regular CD version, this new copy just blows ALL the old copies away big time. nice new CLEAN version. this is the way music was meant to be listened to! wow! anyway, i sold/donated all of my previous versions of the same album. this 1 definitely superceded all of my expectations.
-is AI 5.1 DVD-A mlp? when i choose the surround i *still* only hear most of the music coming out of mains, no center? very little surrounds. john williams doesn't like surround sound music? i thought he'd be one of the first ones to embrace it after episode 3's soundtrack included a "surround sound remix" granted with dialogues. i also didnt think it was as bassy as people claim it is. maybe i'm 2much of a basshead anyway
-phantom of opera. i haven't seen the film at the time of this post but i loved the theatre double disc original recording and this new movie soundtrack arragement really pales in comparison. i mean, the theatre version retained the original cast's SOUL. i know some of the movie cast is from stage... but still, they lost somn in translating to the big screen from stage. technically very awesome though. punchy organ/bass in the intro and lots of chamber echos, i luv it =D. the selection of the songs are my fav. it's like webber's "personal mix tape" takeoff from the theater albums.
-Timeline. i know this score isn't in the movie so i don't need to see the craptastic film, but i still want to see it to see how it was originally scored comparing this version with that. haven't had time with it yet but it sounds 2close to Nemesis. it's like what horner does with his own music

. i know, i know, Goldsmith's better but only in portions, not entire complete scores like williams, who is in a league of his own altogether.
i'm looking forward to the rest!! i can't wait for the ET version! =D. i want MORE, just signed the petition! =D.
PS this is a long thread, haven't had time to check it out yet but anyone recommend any NON-jazz, NON-classical, more rock/pop/rap genre that i can take SACD or DVDA out for a spin? i haven't found any titles that i want to try yet. i like gimmicks with surrounds NO problem! in fact i prefer gimmicks =D.
