Re: Rachael's recipe for covered music dishes
9. Foghat - It'll Be Me
17. NRBQ - Get Rhythm
As always, very cool Rachael!
Foghat covered "It'll Be Me"...I'll have to find that one.
You may know that Jerry Lee recorded that (at least) twice at SUN.
The album version was slower, the 45 was fast and a favorite of a young John Lennon.
Is your NRBQ cut the one with Carl Perkins?

Henry, It'll Be Me was on Foghat's Zig Zag Walk. When I digiized it, it was the second time the record had ever been played. When I originally got it, I made a tape of it. Can you say flawless? Ditto for Boogie Motel.
The NRBQ cut came off of Grooves In Orbit which I think is one of the greatest rock albms ever recorded. I can't find any mention of Carl Perkins playing on it. The cover mentions John Sebastian playing on two cuts. There's no mention of Perkins or any other sidemen. I wish I had all of NRBQ's albums. I keep looking. I would not be suprised if they played with Perkins at some point in their long career. The song I used is a Johnny Cash tune.
I think I've heard Great Balls Of Fire on 45 but I'm not positive. Somebody loaned me a pile of singles about 20 years ago. I'm thinking GBOF was one of 'em...? I do remember that It'll Be Me was on the flipside. It was the first ime I'd ever heard it and it made an impression on me. Anyway, I've never picked up on the differences in versions, if I've heard both...?
I've already started another Covered disc. It has one song so far, Dexy's Midnight Runners doing Van Morrison's Jackie Wilson Said. It'll fill in gradually as I digitize vinyl.....Best wishes from the vinyl depository!

Re: Rachael's recipe for covered music dishes
I was confused about "Get Rhythm". Not a Perkins/NRBQ cut.
My version is on their 1978 disc, "At Yankee Stadium" (Mercury SRM-1-3712).
OK....the Perkins work is on "Carl Perkins and NRBQ" (Columbia CS 9981).
Recorded in 1969.
Now, here's my opportunity to ruin "It'll Be Me" for you.
Jack Clement (Sun Records producer) wrote the song 50 years ago.
The lyrics seem to come from his inner stalker.
"If you find a lump in your sugar bowl,
It'll be me, and I'll be looking for you."
The original working lyrics were:
"If you find a t--- in your toilet bowl,
It'll be me........"

Re: Rachael's recipe for covered music dishes
Come now Henry, those crappie lyics must be from the Weird Al parody....! I think alot of songs have started out too crude for sckuul and been toned down for the masses. That sure doesn't suprise or bother me. I bet Jerry Lee has gotten drunk and sung it the old way somewhere along the line...? Killer is that kind of guy I think.

I've got some audio of Mr. Lewis being quite crude, but that lyrics origin story comes straight from the author, "Cowboy" Jack Clement.
If Jerry Lee so much as burped near a mike, I've got it.
Ever read Little Richard's bio? The way he used to sing Tuttie Frutti was:
"A wop bop a lu bop a good god damn".

Re: Rachael's recipe for covered music dishes
Henry, my fond memories of Jerry Lee are all the news bits he garnered for smashing bootleg 8-track tapes at truckstops all across the south. He made the news frequently....oh....!
I've never read a biography of any rocker. Little Richard's is proably above the curve on intresting or funny.

Re: Rachael's recipe for covered music dishes
I got an awesome CD of Beatles cover from CD Baby recently that I'd highly recommend. It's Fried Glass Onions Vol.3, Memphis Rocks The Beatles. Hot dam, I'd like to hear the other two volumes! I'm close to finishing another disc. I may finish it with a little Insect music. I think this is my fav Beatles' covers albums ever......

Re: Rachael's recipe for covered music dishes
Way, way back somebody suggested I get The Beatles Live At The B.B.C. I wish I hadn't waited so long! I'll use some of these insect covers on however many more discs I make. I started a new MD already. It has one cut so far. I was digitizing Adam Ant's Friend Or Foe last night and used his cover of The Door's Hello, I Love You. In a month or two, I'll have Cozy Covered finished.

Re: Rachael's recipe for covered music dishes
Rachael,
Your thinking of me has just given me the vapors, whatever those are.
Really, thanks!
The New Rhythm and Blues Quartet recording Tonight You Belong to Me just cracks me up. I had no idea they had done it.
An old radio buddy of mine in New York used to be their engineer at Bearsville.
Going back 70 years, I have the song by Cliff Bruner, a legendary originator of western swing fiddle and someone who was on my speed dial until his death a few years ago.
Finally, and without name dropping, I actually own the sheet music to Patience & Prudence's version.
Your collection is amazin'
