Need help identifying a song - reward offered

There's a song I've been trying to ID for about 8-10 years (I think), but I rarely hear it and I happened to hear it today at Home Depot, of all places. Unfortunately they couldn't give me any info, so all I have to go by are a few lyrical excerpts. The singer is female and has a light, mellow voice.

One of the verses starts out: "Sonny came home..."

The refrain starts: "As days go by, I wonder why...
And I believe the refrain ends: "into the fire."

As for the melody, the only way I can notate it here is this (the refrain):
ABC G B G A GFE ABC G B G EDC...

I thought maybe the song was called "Into the Fire," and there is a song by Sarah McLachlan with that title, but it was not it.

Any ideas? If someone can succesfully help me ID the song, there's five bucks in it for ya!

Thanks.

Didn't Jewel or somebody with a similar style do this recently (ie last decade) as well? Or was it always Shawn Colvin (no idea who he is)? I remember it was a female voice...

According to ASCAP, the writers of 'Sunny Came Home' are Shawn Colvin and John Leventhal. Paolo Santos only did a cover.

No argument. The info on that lyrics site is user contributed and likely has errors. I'd just searched out of curiosity as I'm not even familiar with the song. :b

I remember that song by Shawn Colvin. It played quite a bit on the radio.

Here are the lyrics and a brief wav file sample of Sunny Came Home from her website:
