We knew this was coming, but it still hurts. I've spent a lot of time this past week with his new album, The Wind.

So much to do, there's plenty on the farm
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Saturday night I like to raise a little harm
I'll sleep when I'm dead
I'm drinking heartbreak motor oil and Bombay gin
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Straight from the bottle, twisted again
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Well, I take this medicine as prescribed
I'll sleep when I'm dead
It don't matter if I get a little tired
I'll sleep when I'm dead
I've got a .38 special up on the shelf
I'll sleep when I'm dead
If I start acting stupid
I'll shoot myself
I'll sleep when I'm dead
So much to do, there's plenty on the farm
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Saturday night I like to raise a little harm
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Sleep well, Warren

I am sad to hear of this. Lawyers, Guns & Money was one of my favorite songs. I may buy The Wind soon.

Jim took the words out of my mouth - we knew it was coming, but this one really hurts. I still vividly remember the first time I listened to "Excitable Boy" back in 1978. I had purchased the album largely on the strength of the rave review in "Rolling Stone", and from the opening Waddy Wachtel guitar lick on "Johnny Strikes Up The Band" through to the fadeout on "Lawyers, Guns & Money" I was completely mesmerized. I had never heard anything like it.
I've been listening to "The Wind" steadily since it came out a couple of weeks ago, but I have to say my favorite Zevon song remains the first track I heard on that summer night 25 years ago:
Quote:
Dry your eyes, my little friend
Let me take you by the hand
Freddie get ready
Rock steady
When Johnny strikes up the band
They'll be rocking in the projects
Walking down along the strand
Freddie get ready
Rock steady
When Johnny strikes up the band
And Johnny is my main man
He's the keeper of the keys
He'll put your mind at ease
He's guaranteeed to please
Back by popular demand
Look around, my little friend
Jubilation in the land
Freddie get ready
Rock steady
When Johnny strikes up the band
|
Rock steady, Warren.

I've dreaded this day even since his announcement of terminal cancer. RIP Mr. Zevon. Thank you for your music and your humor.

Don't let us get sick
Don't let us get old
Don't let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight
The sky was on fire
When I walked to the mill
To take up the slack in the line
I thought of my friends
And the troubles they've had
To keep me from thinking of mine
Don't let us get sick
Don't let us get old
Don't let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight
The moon has a face
And it smiles on the lake
And causes the ripples in Time
I'm lucky to be here
With someone I like
Who maketh my spirit to shine
Don't let us get sick
Don't let us get old
Don't let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight

I saw his photo on a USA today paper today and I didn't want to read it because I knew it wasn't good news.
When I get off work I'll lift a strong one to you Warren. Hope heaven lives up to the advanced billings.

I wonder if David Letterman will rerun the great show he had a few months ago where Warren was the only guest. It was a real nice tribute to Warren Zevon.

Warren, when you first came to prominence in the late 1970's, your clever, literate-yet-rocking tunes hit the stale air of the limp music scene like a hurricane ripping the door off a musty, long-shuttered closet.
A pina colada at Trader Vic's indeed!
And a dry spell for Roland the headless Thompson gunner!
Peace be upon you, my friend, and thank you for shaking up this world.
