Need SACD Hybrid Recommendations
As the title suggests, I am looking for some SACD hybrid recommendations. Currently, I don't have a SACD player yet, but if my library gets large enough I will probably end up getting a player. I do have a DVD-a player (RP-91) but I would like to experience new music and have it remain portable via the hybrid option, which dvda doesnt currently offer.
My musical tastes include Rock, Alternative Rock, Jazz (especially big band), and Classical.

Shane go to Acoustic Sounds' site:
www.acousticsounds.com
Their listings make it easy to sort out the single-layer stuff. Best wishes!

Just a quick question, I clicked on your link Rachael, why are they selling Norah Jones for $29.98 when you can swing by Best Buy and pick it up for $13.99? The link for it in "Bestsellers" has that price, and then lower down you can click on another confusing link (under New Arrivals) and the price is $17.99?
What's up with that site?

Rock:
I like almost the entire Rolling Stones series and there are Bob Dylans coming in hybrid in the fall.
Classical:
Most of the classical releases have been superb so far, but I'm not sure which are hybrid or not.

you can check SACDinfo to see if titles are hybrid, but there doesn't seem to be a way to search for hybrid only.

So are Michael Tilson Thomas's recordings of the Mahler symphonies highly recommendable? I've never gotten into Mahler before and thought maybe now is a good time. I recall somebody recommended one of his SACDs, but would like more opinions.
How about the few SACDs of popular concertos? Is Stern's recording of Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn any good? How 'bout Hilary Hahn's Brahms/Stravinsky and Mendelssohn/Shostakovich? And Lang Lang's Rach 3?
I'm also tempted to get Lindsay's Beethoven String Quartet #13, which I already have on redbook CD. Curious to know whether the SACD sounds as harsh as the redbook CD.
I want both truly good performances and good recorded sound, not just one or the other, and don't mind SACD-only discs although will only be doing 2-channel for the forseeable future.
Thanks.

For the absolute best smooth jazz hybrid SACD get Diana Krall's " The Look of Love" hybrid SACD. Diana Krall is my hands down favorite smooth jazz artist of all time so my opinion my be a little bias.
However Norah Jones hybrid SACD " Come Away With Me" sure rockets her it to a solid second place in my book. Both disks are available at Best Buy, I think I paid $14.99 for Diana Krall and only $13.99 for Norah Jones, both are worth every penny.
Also there is a new hybrid SACD John Coltrane's Blue Train, now I don't have nor have I heard it yet so I can not comment on it, but it's Coltrane so it has to be damn good. It will be my very next SACD purchase you can bet on that.

Extremely. I've heard Mahler before, but these discs (as well as another from Telarc) gave me an excuse to immerse myself in his work. It's a lot to handle, but if you dig it, these SACDs are the way to go. The performances are amazing, and the surround sound is the perfect vehicle for Mahler's huge sound. This is exactly the type of music that benefits the most from the format. The fact that the recordings were done direct to DSD makes it that much sweeter.

Is Stern's recording of Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn any good?
|
Yes, mainly due, of course, to Stern's classic performance. This is an older recording, so it's a way to hear SACD's purpoted "closer to the master tape" at its best.

How 'bout Hilary Hahn's Brahms/Stravinsky and Mendelssohn/Shostakovich?
|
An excellent sounding disc. Since Hahn is young and considered by some purists to be a "gimmick" to some degree, I'm sure there are better performances out there. However, I have no problem with this disc (but I wasn't too familiar with these pieces to begin with).
A virtuosic performance but not as mature and lyrical as the better performances of this piece. Valados' performance of the piece on Sony's SACD is stronger IMO, but it's not a hybrid.
