Recently got this SACD following the recommendation from Larry B. from HTT.
I must say I'm glad I did.
This is a MC/stereo/cd SACD hybrid, however my comments were based on the MC SACD layer.
Musicians are all double bass players[jazz],Ray Brown,John Clayton,Christian Mc Bride.A couple of tracks features percussion as well.
This session was recorded live in New York,at Blue Note, front of a rather small audience,[jazz club size]whom many are musicians themselves.
3 bass player on the stage, one would think what a hell?
Well it took me a couple of "songs" to get use to that sound, but then you realize how much music can be achieved with those instruments in the right hands.
Each of these players have a distinct style, and they recorded them to left[John Clayton] Right Christian Mc Bride]and L+R[summed center] Ray Brown.
Interestingly the center channel is used for ambiance mostly from the audience, and their vocals, and some high hat from the percussions. The surrounds carry mostly the "tail" from each side[L-R].
The repertoire are mostly known favorites from Gershwin[Porgy and Bess],Monk,Dizzy Gillespie, etc.....and couple of new ones from Brown, and Clayton.
My favorite is Brown's new "Taco with a Pork Chop",and it's because of it's energy and fun that comes through. It's title is the only line for vocal, that sang by all three guys, with the audience joins in for good measure.
Many titles features bowing, which adds more "flavor" to the sound, and showcase these guys's versatility.
This a Telarc disc was recorded live onto a DSD machine,so the sound predictably is very good, and it is.
I got mine from Acoustic Sounds.
