Led Zeppelin "HTWWW" engineer hints at future Zep DVD-A releases

In a recent interview with ICE Magazine, engineer Kevin Shirley, who was involved with the restoration, remixing, and remastering of the audio for the Led Zeppelin DVD and live CD "How The West Was Won", mentions that the audio was sampled at high-def resolution and that "there's going to be a DVD-audio release of that (HTWWW) coming out a bit later." He adds, "It is excellent, fucking mind-blowing."

So apparently for some, the CDs that arrive on May 27th will be nothing more than coasters within a few months. And Lord knows if the live stuff sounds that good, it won't be that much longer until the full Zeppelin catalog is rereleased in 5.1 DVDA.

Here's my problem, and it's more of a hardware issue, so excuse me for bringing it up here, but I figure this is becoming a more common problem and others might have some knowledge. I specifically held off on a new DVD player because of this future problem - I knew that Zeppelin was going to go DVDA eventually, and that most of the other high-def releases I would be interested in are/will be in SACD (Stones, Police). So at this point, I need a universal player. But I still need something that acts as a good DVD/CD player as well, i.e. has 5-disc capacity, progressive scan, etc. I have yet to see something that really comes close to this. Anybody know if Pioneer, Yamaha, whoever, is slated to release something close to this in the coming months? I'd hate to have to toggle between two players, if it came down to that.

I don't know of any universal changers yet, but I bet one or two is here by the fall.

I don't mind 5.1 DVD-A as long as they also include a good 2.0 version as well.

If it's not worth waiting until the last minute to do, then it's not worth doing.

Wow, this is great news. I was wondering what was taking Warner so long to bring us some Zeppelin. Put me down for their entire catalog if it all comes to DVD-A.

That's the kind of comment that makes me wonder if this disc will actually offer sound quality that the discerning listener will consider exemplary. Unfortunately, that viewpoint connotes an image of someone who thinks that booming bass that causes a car to vibrate at a red light is good sound. Translation: If it's loud, it's good. It's also the sort of comment that makes me wonder if this individual equates good hi-rez audio with whiz-bang surround-sound mixes.

Sorry for being so negative.

Not for me. I still like to be able to listen to my music in the car and on a computer.

Any Zep release will be welcomed (and purchased) by me! Bring it on home!

I hate to be a party pooper, but does anyone know why either hi-rez format can't put out more NEW music? I'm not saying LZ is boring or dated but once again we're going down the same musical road again.

The music biz seems to be a (strange) universe unto itself.........

This will be great when it happens. I just wish that we see other regular catalog released as well.

Because archival and reissue titles sell, whereas "new" music gets downloaded. I would love a hi-rez 5.1 Queens of the Stone Age or White Stripes LP, but perhaps I am in the minority.
