They picked a GOOD TIME to release it (Halloween 2002) and say it will be truly scary. We'll see. It does raise my eyebrows a little though.

Wasn't this remade starring Bill Pullman and Will Smith a few years ago?

To me "War of the Worlds" is the ultimate sci-fi movie from the early 50's. The effects were state-of-the-art at the time (winning an Oscar) and it still stands up today as a great film. Of course, if they remake it the effects will be great, but I'll still have a warm spot for the original. Perhaps this will give Paramount a reason to release a badly need SE DVD. I can only hope.

My vision of the martian war machines have been shaped more by the 'Classics Illustrated' comic book then by the movie. Any one remember them? It's been so long since I read the book, I can't remember how closely they adhere to Well's vision.

I still love the movie though.

Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a wornout coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another.--Irving Townsend

yep I remember these vividly. The novel was set in Victorian era England and the machines had 4 legs almost like a mechanical spider design. If they go back to the source material like Carpenter did with The THING this could really be interesting.

I also love the original though. Brings back fond memories of watching this on a Saturday afternoon as a kid.

The walking machines in the 'Classic Illustrated' were tripods, so they at least made that modification to the original look.

I guess its time to dig out my audio book of 'War of the Worlds' which is read by Robert Hardy who might be familiar to some of you as Siegfried on the 'All Creatures Great and Small' BBC series. He's excellent.

Does anyone read the links they post? Follow them a few clicks.

Three clicks away I found this:

"Due to many similarities between the planned version of WAR OF THE WORLDS and the World Trade Center attack, Pendragon Pictures is pushing production of WAR OF THE WORLDS back one year, in which time the screenplay will be reworked. This new version will be an accurate adaptation of the Wells classic story placed in its original 1898 setting."

So instead of Independence Day with 2002 level special effects and possibly elements of HG Well's wonderful story we get an original 1898 setting. This sounds so much better to me. Talk about insurmountable odds! 1898 technology against an alien invasion! The humans might actually have to think to get out of this one! (Not like Jeff Goldblum and his virus plot device.)

Now, who in the hell is Pendragon Films? I mean, the people that made Dungeons and Dragons had a big budget, too but that didn't stop them from making a horrible film!

Not just Jeff Goldblum's virus problem but no Will Smith making wise cracks when the end of mankind looks upon us.

Johnny, I had that Classics Illustrated title. I also had their comic-book version of The Time Machine. Oh, the memories. ...
