Quills: Not quite in my top ten.

The opening 30 minutes are, for me, the highlight of the film. Exceptional character introductions for everyone and hilariously perverse humor throughout.

Eventually though, the film seemed to lose the humor and cinematic beauty that marked the early acts, before finally stumbling through its six or seven conclusions.

It was a Top 5 film after 45 minutes, a Top 10 after an hour-and-a-half, and only a Top 20 by the end credits.

Too bad.

So, Seth, is Jesus' Son a 2000 or 1999 release? I think you will agree with me that it is a 2000 release even though IMDB says 1999. It wasn't officially released in the US theaters until 2000. I'll post my thoughts on the movie as soon as I am done with my analysis.

Edwin, I know I'm not Seth but looks to me that Jesus' Son
is a 2000 release if we are going by Academy standards. It
did first come out in 1999 @ Telluride but didn't come into
full release (NY/LA) until 6/2000.

Seth, have you got the new numbers on the top 10 yet? Go
engineer boy, go!

I finally saw Jesus’ Son (out of four). Billy Crudup’s performance was the highlight of this film although I found it to be too episodic. It is considered a road picture. Characters are constantly introduced but they don’t stay long enough to make an emotional connection with the audience or with me. Still, it is a well-acted film but I’m afraid it won’t crack into my Top Ten list.

I am including this as a 2000 film for the same reason I am including Fantasia 2000 as a 2000 film *even though* its first public showing was in 1999 as a benefit.

Here is my Top Ten List .

Anson and I had similar comments about the film. Probably it's biggest weakness IMHO.

If it were "live" I would probably have resorted to heckling them off the stage with "ENOUGH ALREADY".

Okay, I wouldn't be that rude. Instead I would have said "Fire all Zig. For Great Justice."

Jesus Son is NOT a 2000 film simply because it SUCKS!

ok, that had nothing to do with reality, just throwing the curveball. Yea, I'm saying we default to Academy standards and must be careful about the IMDb years. I know there are different sides to the debate and I'm not looking to win, I just want to have some standard cut-off point. Somewhere between the first draft of the script and the DVD release.

So Jesus Son is pretty good, huh? Guess I have another film to consider for my list. This thread is a bit like the AFI thread in that it gives a good, solid "to see" list for the year. I may not love all the contenders, but going through the top list makers here has helped me get more out of my theater going dollar.

I'm going to go back and retabulate as soon as I watch Wonder Boys (membership has it's privledges so to speak ). Dancer in the Dark next week on DVD, hurray.

I'll also get some final tab done right before the Oscars, just so we can see how our top 10 fare in the awards.

And, btw, if anybody notices films that are being thrown about as 2000 films when by AA standards they aren't, please let us know. I haven't made sure on each film or anything, I've been trusting the list makers to do that, although I have taken a few out of consideration that I knew were wrong for sure.

BTW, I have yet to see a 2001 film. Seems weird that I have somehow managed to avoid them all. Hopefully, Mood for Love will break that streak.

Has it been decided that we're gonna call IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE a 2001 film?

I don't really have a preference, but since it's gonna be right at the top of both of my lists (no. 2 from 2000 or no. 1 from 2001 so far), I'd like to know!

Funny, I'm calling it a 2000 title because that's exactly what it is, but some here are going by North American release first. So be it, but you'll be seeing my 2000 list updated when I see ITMFL and Pollock next week.

Sorry im a little late on this but here are my Top 10 of 2000:

1.Traffic
2.A Time For Drunken Horses
3.Erin Brokovich
4.Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
5.Gladiator
6.Billy Elliot
7.Almost Famous
8.The Gift
9.Snatch
10.Nurse Beaty

I am a big fan of Iranian film and would recommend A Time For Drunken Horses, The Wind Will Carry Us, and Color of Paradise to anyone.

EDIT: I have to add Almost Famous, which I saw last night on DVD. I decided to simply replace it with Finding Forrester. I thought these two films were somewhat similar but Almost Famous touched me deeper and overall was a better film.

I hope life isn't a big joke, because I don't get it.

Jason, I realize that it may have hit NA at some point in 2000, but with a 2001 NY/LA opening I would say it belongs on the 2001 list.

Here's one very good reason why - come next year when Oscars are being discussed and best films of the year are being figured, ITMFL is going to be brought up. Heck, it may get a Foreign Language nomination. Then we will be sitting here having this same
