Who played the demon face in 'THE EXORCIST'?

I've been meaning to ask this for some time now, who was the actor who played the face of the demon pazoozoo in 'The Exorcist'?

I've always considered that white face to be one of THE most fiendish and nightmare inducing faces i've ever seen, and it would comfort me if I knew who it was that played it. To this day, I cannot bring myself to even look at it!

From the documentary 'The Fear of God: The making of The Exorcist' the face looks to be played by Dick Smith, the make up artist on the film, but i'm not really sure though.

The face always reminded me of "Death" from The Seventh Seal but I don't see any credits for "The Face" anywhere.

You know, Fred, if you keep your sense of humor like you do, you just might make it.

Eileen Dietz

She also played Regan in a few scenes, including the pea soup sequence.

It turns out the demon face used in the movie was just make-up tests cut into the movie. Very frightening make up tests.

The Eileen Dietz makeup tests are indeed highly unnerving, from reasons I'm not entirely clear on. They appear as subliminals for a frame or two (more in TVYNS) and on freeze-framing have a definite power that gives me the willies.

Sometimes, when I turn off the lights after a movie and head upstairs to bed, that friggin face flashes before me in my minds eye and I pick up the pace a bit.

No other fictional image has given me the creeps as much. I'm glad to see that others are affected by it.

I started watching Exorcist: Dominion last night;

Spoiler:
I was taken by surprise by "The Face" within the first 30 minutes.

Of the 5 Exorcist films, this one already comes in at number 2 on the "Scariest" rank because of "The Face" and I haven't even finished the movie yet.

Screen grab anyone?

Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

The funny thing is, as unnerving as the demon face is Eileen is pretty cute in person.

I met her at a signing a few years back and while she was quietly signing DVDs she suddenly looked up and screamed "Boo!" at my friend and I.

Generally a fun experience.
