I think Gladiator is disliked by many people because it actually is a shallow film
|
Where did you ever get the impression it was disliked by many people? The only time I've ever come across any animosity to this film is from a handful of people in the Movies section.
Nothing wrong with the movie, it was very well directed by Ridley Scott and the actors played it to the hilt , it made a ton of money, won awards and even the critics enjoyed it. An old fashioned epic, the kind they supposedly don't make anymore. Only downside is it's opened the floodgates to a rash of 'epics' which will be showing at your local colosseum in the next couple of years (Brad Pitt in a toga, anyone? muahahaha), hopefully some of them will turn out great.

Is this a serious question?
Well the topic of this very thread is "Why do so many people dislike Gladiator?"
Too much debt...

Oh I see, I should have played the game and said something like "yeah isn't that weird?" or maybe "well I'm not bloody surprised, Gladiator makes Gigli look like an epic".
ps. I think thats the first time I've ever quoted myself on the forum.

No need IMO
Actually, I have yet to see a second person that I know in person who liked Gladiator immeadiately. I'm talking about 20 odd people here. That's on top of many negative reviews + the HTF folks you mention. OTOH, when I say "disliked by many people", that's a relative suggestion. Meaning the film is disliked by many people for a film which won the academy award.
Too much debt...

Yeah well thats why they're odd!!
I think Titanic wins the prize for award-winning, hugely successful but few people will come forward and admit they actually liked the film.

I bet at least one of those '20 odd people' may even own the DVD.

I'd say more than one. That's what I find funny about people who supposively hate it. They still bought it, nonetheless. Same thing with all the new SW movies. Everyone hates them but they bought the DVDs. I'm sure Ridley Scott and George Lucas like very much how some of you "hate" Gladiator and the new SW.

I agree that the only real negative vibes I've ever heard on Gladiator have been from people on internet forums (especially this one!).
The general public LOVED it, let's face it.
That's like starting a "Why do so many people hate Titanic?" thread...again, the general public LOVES that movie (1.8 BILLION wordwide, hello!?)
The Movies forum does not represent general public opinion...

Well, let's consider the company on this forum. Extremes of the movie-going world my friends.
I've already espoused my opinion on the film, although I don't necessarily agree with my Midnight Cowboy remark anymore.
