Actually, I heard (sorry, can't remember where, IMDB maybe?) that Van Damme backed out because his face was going to be covered, which makes sense if you are trying to become a memorable action hero.
Off topic alert: Anyone ever catch Van Damme's role as an extra in the classically horrible 80's dance movie, "Breakin'"?
Back on topic, in short, the movie is an action classic, as important to the sub-genre of Action SF as Alien was for Horror SF, and IMO a really influencial film. The two films do share some plot similarities, but the tone of each film is so different that they command their own respective sub-genre entirely. It is only natural the Pr. vs Al. game was even concieved, since they seem to make great companion pieces.
Incidentally, this movie was one of the first movies I saw on a date (age 15 or so, I think) and I was already soooo nervous, the adrenaline rush the movie gave me made so jumpy, my palms were sweating, I was a wreck! But what fun!

As far as I know Van Damme wasn't going to do the live-action performance with the make-up but the effect shots of the cloaked predator... When he learned that he will have to wear a blue suit all the time an wont be seen on the screen at all he backed (or chickened? ) out.
Can't remember were I read that but it was one of the very few things I ever read about making the movie...

I remember when I saw this for the first time, I rented it on VHS and I had just got my new 4 head Hi-Fi stereo VCR. I was not expecting a whole lot but by the time I got halfway through it, I knew I had to rush out and buy it.

Ulf, thanks for the great link, and welcome to the forum! You know, from what i've heard about Van Damm, he seems like he'd be that vain as to turn down a role because his face is covered. His loss, he turned down the role of a lifetime, I mean to play an alien who goes one on one with Arnold! Either he, or his agent needed their heads examined.

The right guy, Kevin Peter Hall, was chosen to play the Predator. I really couldn't see the Predator being smaller than Arnold. What fun would that be.
By the way, thanks for the link, and welcome to the forum. Great pics.

While not my favorite film, you would lose your 80s credentials if you did not have a certain affection for it. Ahh! Those acid-washed days of yore...

Well, I guess I need to show my appreciation for Predator as well. Loved it!!!! That really is one of Arnie's best flicks other than the obvious, Terminator and Conan! I enjoyed all the characters. The gatlin gun that Jesse and that other guy used was awesome.

That's a great site. Thanks for the notice.
I honestly don't think I can remember ever meeting anyone who truly hates Predator. A further testament to it's greatness.
