The Grey Zone - I found to be an excellent illustration of the horriffic things humans are capable of doing in order to survive and how difficult a struggle it would be to hold on to one's humanity when faced with such a situation. Tim Blake Nelson's images and use of sound create several unsettling and painful moments and I was enveloped in this story in a way that never occured with the much more successful The Pianist. There was one speech that I thought was unnecessary, and a trite VO narration that somewhat mars the ending but Nelson has a sure hand most of the way. I thought Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne (wish we'd seen more of her) were the highlights of the cast.
Wish it had been longer, there were several times I wanted to see what other characters were doing, more about planning the uprising, etc. Also wish the DVD had some descriptive extras. B+

Yeah, well, the semester just ended.
BTW, I had to write 30,000 words for my film class alone (that comes out to about 100 double spaced pages). Add to that at least 1500 pages of reading too and I was just a tad bit busy.
My "to watch" DVD list swelled from about 8 up to 40 during the same period, which I'm now working hard on correcting.

Updated with Paul Greengrass' Bloody Sunday - a gripping dramatization of the chilling events of January 30, 1972 in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Igby Goes Down is a dreadful, insufferable movie. As evidenced by my The Graduate rant, I have a low tolerance for wealthy people bedding multiple hotties to be whiny and bitter about how awful their lives are. It's like an attempt at a teenage Neil Labute film without a tenth of the wit or insight.
Whatever happened to movies like Trouble In Paradise, The Thin Man, or The Lady Eve, where rich people actually enjoy being rich?
D-, Igby now has the honor of being the worst movie I've seen from 2002. Yes, it managed to be even worse than Austin Powers 3. I'm pissed off at the time wasted when I could have been watching something much better.

Maid In Manhattan was your average romantic comedy/chick flick. Occasionally entertaining with not too many eye-rolling moments. C+
Next up will be Undercover Brother and Rodger Dodger.

Moonlight Mile
7.5 of 10
I like the story premise and some parts of the script, but it also needs some trimming. It becomes a bit too talky for its own good at times. For example, Sarandon is given a long speech, only to get stuck with another one just a scene or two later. That sort of writing ends up making the film feel drawn out and boring.
But the premise is interesting as I mentioned, and the acting it pretty great at times. Seeing the actors working together is probably the most rewarding aspect of the film. Down the stretch it became a bit more tedious which is where it really lost points with me.
Done right, this is Oscar caliber material. This wasn't done right though.

Updated my list with:
Below (*** / ****)
A well-made and just plain fun submarine movie. It gets my vote for best sub movie of 2002. (Although to be fair K19 wasn't much competition)
