I'm terribly surprised to see that Happy Accidents (my #4 film of the year) is only in one other person's top-10 list. Worse, I think only two others in this thread have it in their "Honorable Mentions" list.
Did this movie only play in, what, 5 theatres across the country this year? You'd think if people went out of their way to see things like Mulholland Drive (which, sadly, I have not had a chance to see, but at least I've heard of it), Amelie, Fat Girl, and the like, you'd expect to see a lot more lists at least contain a mention of Happy Accidents.
I am extremely surprised!

Number four on mine, as well, but I can understand why it didn't make more lists - it was really difficult to find. Heck, it didn't even open in Los Angeles initially - just New York and Boston, and Boston apparently because the director has family and friends here. Once it started getting great reviews and word-of-mouth - a large chunk of the people who saw it, liked it, and a large chunk of them really liked it, IFC opened it wider, but since there were only so many prints, they got shuttled from place to place. So, it never got a chance to get national exposure and was off a lot of people's radar.
The lesson, as always - if you love movies, make yourself aware of these things. Get on the mailing list of every boutique house you would be convinced to travel to, poke around the alterna-movies thread, when someone mentions a movie you haven't heard of, look it up. And, most importantly, when you see something amazing, don't keep it to yourself. Happy Accidents did as well as it did because some of us would not shut up about it, much to our Candian friends' frustration (IFC Films evidently doesn't distribute north of the border, meaning they didn't get Happy Accidents or The Business Of Strangers).

Seth, I finally went ahead and added my top 10 lists. Didn't do a bottom, as I managed to avoid most of the bad stuff. I don't get as many opportunities to go as I used to, so I have to pick more carefully.

They do now; Odeon Films just picked up IFC to distribute up here. I don't think they claimed Happy Accidents for distribution, so I will have to see that on DVD.

I don't know that Happy Accidents even made it to Houston, the 4th largest city in the country. If it did, it must have come & gone in a week or so. I'll be looking for this on DVD as well. That is, assuming there is a DVD coming.

Although of little consequence, I edited my Top 4 to a Top 5 by seeing Black Hawk Down. It came in at #3. My top three were very different in tone, style, and purpose. Any of the three would have beaten my 2000 #1 ( Almost Famous). But they were all incredible, moving films in their own way.
Take care,
Chuck
