You've never heard of problem's with a movies pacing. Although I haven't seen the movie yet, I can't comment. But I know exactly what they're talking about.

Welp. Saw the film last night, and it was incredible. They got nearly everything spot-on, and while it wasn't exactly like the book, as a movie it was great. This one goes to 11. That said, here are the nitpicks:

Spoiler:

1. Boromir's horn. Sounded REALLY stupid, everyone in the theater laughed. I hope they overdub it for the DVD.

2. A little bit TOO scary. I mean, the Bilbo goblin-face thing in Rivendell? Everyone in the theater jumped. Overall I found it too be a bit too dark and actually horrifying, though that's an aesthetic choice. This one's going to be fun on repeat viewings.

That's about it. I mean there are other tiny problems, but those are the only things that really jumped out at me.

Incidentally, the person who said Sauron taught others to make the other Rings of power was wrong. A small detail I know, but in The Silmarillion it's revealed that Sauron worked his way in under guise of friendship, learned the Elves' craft, and then used it to make the One Ring to rule all the other Rings of power that the Elves had already made. I thought that the movie actually made a MUCH better point about Sauron and the One Ring's connection than the book.
Spoiler:
The book never quite explains WHY Sauron dies when the Ring is destroyed. It says that a bunch of his power is in it, but it doesn't make sense that he would just die. The movie states that really, Sauron and the Ring are the same. One cannot exist without the other. I might be off on this since it's been a year since I've read TTT and ROTK, but it seems like the movie got this across much better than the book.

Marvin, don't try and discredit Patrick's opinion of the film simply because he didn't find it the flawless movie you did. He's allowed to have his opinion. Just because he holds a different opinion doesn't mean he's wrong.

About Saruman, the characterization is NOT changed, and here is why:

FOTR and TTT spoilers:
Spoiler:

Alright. I at first thought that Saruman's urging Gandalf to ally with Sauron and his desire to serve him were very different from the book, too. I mean c'mon, in the second book Saruman is trying to get the Ring for himself, right? Well anyways, I'm re-reading TTT right now. The orcs of Mordor and the Uruk-hai of Saruman are WORKING TOGETHER. They're a combined party bringing the hobbits to Saruman. This is very clear in the book, so it's obvious that Saruman is actually allied with Mordor...for the moment. I think it will be revealed in the next movies, like it was revealed in the next two books, that Saruman is putting on the facade of an alliance with Sauron, but it only lasts so long as the Ring is not in his possession. If he gets the Ring or makes his own, he will turn against Sauron. Saruman's pleas to Gandalf to join with Sauron are just another smokescreen to help Saruman get what he wants.

Terrell, it makes sense.....you'll realize it when you see the movie. I thought the movie had really taken a left turn regarding Saruman as opposed to the books, but in the next films I'm sure we'll see that it's spot-on. LOVED this film!

just seems to me that it would have been smarter to spread them out a bit more... maybe 1 1/2 or 2 years.

Steve, what are you crazy?! :-) You want to wait even longer?!! Argh!

The DVD will be out in plenty of of time to kick up some hype for TTT. The sooner, the better :-D

Since these are really part of one story; FOTR didn't wrap everything up nicely and doesn't stand on its own as complete, a quicker release schedule is definitely called for.

I wonder if TTT will start off with an introduction beginning, "In last year's episode... " :-)

Spoilers for TTT:

We saw the Palantir in FOTR. Saruman has been so overawed by what Sauron has let him see in the Palantir that Saruman believes Sauron's forces are unstoppable. The only way to defeat Sauron is to side with him and work from the inside.. but of course, should Saruman get the ring first, so much the better. He's trying to pull the wool over Sauron's eye. But there's no lid on Sauron's eye, woollen or not :-)

I think I'm the only "Patrick" that's posted to this thred, but I don't think I was the one that mentioned gimmicky stuff like the Elven language. Just trying to set the record straight. (Perhaps it was PhillipG that made the comment under contention).

What is so powerfull about the ring? ie, how would Borimir use it against Sauron? Those who would use it against against the forces of dark, would they just become invisible or what??

Aside from the basic powers of immortality and invisibility, the One Ring pretty much has all the power of Sauron himself. Thus possessing it, you would imagine one could perform some pretty impressive magical powers.

Specifically, the Ring has the designed ability to control all the other magical rings. Thus if you mastered it, you could control the Nazgul as well. However this is easier said than done, as the ring has a mind of its own, and could likely only be truly mastered by someone of great power... and even th
