So he was the last?

Legendary is all you can say about those men.

Re: RIP Ollie Johnston

Thank you Ollie!

I knew he did a voice in The Iron Giant (1999) but did not realize his most recent acting gig before that was 65 years earlier.

Going through his animation credits just gives me goosebumps.

What a life.

Long-time friends Ollie and Frank Thomas were cameo-ed by Brad Bird in The Iron Giant as the train operators, and later in The Incredibles ("No school like the old school"), providing their own voices in each case.

Jerry Beck posted a marvellous tribute from Bird at his Cartoon Brew site:

Re: RIP Ollie Johnston

I came very close to missing this news.

The end of an era. Thank goodness people like Brad Bird (and others) understand the importance of these men and their place in film history.

New York Times article.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Re: RIP Ollie Johnston

Johnson and Frank Thomas were such a superb team - gay couples could learn much from their mutual love and devotion, even though totally platonic. They knew each other's thoughts and completed one-another's sentences. Loved their books, their short documentaries on DVD's and the (original ad-free) Disney Channel. It's a cliche to say it, but in this case it is completely true: we'll never see the likes of them again.

As a side note, re-watch THE NEVERENDING STORY and see if you don't agree with me that the Luck Dragon looks like it was based on Ollie.
