Thrilled with the Juno nominations. I thought the screenplay would get nominated but I didn't think it had a prayer for Best Picture or Best Director. Thrilled with Ellen Page's Best Actress nominated for the same reason I'm thrilled with Reitman's nom. I'm happy for Johnny Depp's nod as Sweeney, but wouldn't be heartbroken if he didn't win it since it isn't the game changer that Jack Sparrow was. I'm surprised Saoirse Ronan got Supporting Actress nom since Keira Knightley got all of the buzz and Ronan's what — 13? Brad Bird's screenplay nomination for Ratatouille was also a surprise to me and virtually seals a win for Best Animated against Marjane Satrapi's foreign darling Persepolis. I was hoping Bruno Delbonnel would get a cinematography nod for Across the Universe but I haven't seen the actual nominees so I don't know what it was up against. A good year for Industrial Light & Magic with two F/X nods after years of suffering insurgents. The brilliant work of its people on the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy under severe budget constraints really opened the way for its return to greatness.

I haven't seen Atonement yet so I can't comment on the validity of Wright's lack of nomination, but I think Reitman absolutely deserves to be there. Diablo Cody's screenplay was clever and well-structured but it would have been the easiest thing to since without exactly the right tone, music, casting and performances. It's a real high-wire act of a script and Reitman absolutely nailed it. He brought together — and often brought something new out of — the absolutely best cast that script could have possibly had.

Me too. No one seemed to like Surf's Up and many, myself included, were surprised by how good The Simpsons Movie proved to be.

Re: *** Official 2008 Oscars Nominations List and Forum Discussion Thread

I am disappointed that Zodiac got nothing. Fincher's direction was probably as good as the frontrunners in BD, and better than some of the nominees.

Casey Affleck shouldn't be a surprise...it's a fantastic turn, as good as Bardem's in many ways. He won't win, but maybe he should.

I'd like to say DDL is a lock, but then I thought he was in 2002 as well

And I hope Deakins doesn't split the vote against himself. He should be 1-2 in that category.

Re: *** Official 2008 Oscars Nominations List and Forum Discussion Thread

Hard to believe "Atonement" was nominated for BP if the acting and directing apparently weren't worthy.

"Surf's Up" for Best Animated? WTF is going on in voters' heads???

Very disappointed that "Hairspray" was completely shut out while the pap from "Enchanted" is clogging up 3 of 5 best song noms. Most of the "Hairspray" songs were ineligible, but there were a couple of new songs written for the film ("Ladies Choice," "Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)") that were superior to anything in "Enchanted" (which, if I hadn't seen it for free, might have been the first film I ever tried to get a refund on).

In 1936, "My Man Godfrey" was up for Best Actor, Best Actresss, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay, yet failed to get a best Pic nom. (Must have been the Art Direction...) "Libeled Lady", on the other hand, from the same year, was nominated for Best Pic as its sole nomination.

BTW, the following is was the Academy Web Page
Quote:
Up to five nominations will be made in most categories, with balloting for these nominations restricted to members of the Academy branch concerned; only actors, for instance, determine the nominees in the acting categories. Nominations for awards in the Foreign Language Film category are made by a large screening group composed of members from all branches. Best Picture nominations and final winners in most categories are determined by vote of the entire membership.

So maybe all the cinematographers loved it but the actors and directors didn't.

Re: *** Official 2008 Oscars Nominations List and Forum Discussion Thread

There tends to be in these things the belief that the Academy is one person, or a group of co-ordinated people who favor one and snub another. This is, I feel, a mischaracterization of the process. There are only 5 nominees and the collective votes determine them. It's possible the 5th nominee beat the 6th would be nominee by 1 vote. In such a small sample population, there is a lot of arbitrariness that enters in. Also, its like making an individual top ten of the year list. Do you smile at your number ten as you usher it into your pantheon and scorn disdainfully at your poor number 11, forever cast aside to wander in perdition? Of course not. More likely you agonized before making your decision.

We all like to see our favorites do well and be recognized (partially because it validates our own opinions) but at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter that much. I'm not going to like or dislike a movie because it was or was not nominated. As for the unfairness of this process, well, that's life, inn't it?

I have to echo the sentiment about "Hairspray." While I was very surprised it got no Best Song nomination, I was absolutley bowled over at it receiving NO technical noms -- no costume, no set decoration, nothin'. Wow.

I think Johnny Depp is a surprise for a Best Actor nomination. He hasn't been nominated in anything else except the Golden Globes where there are 10 Best Actor noms. He won the GG for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, but I don't think many people expected him to get an Oscar nomination because the field is very strong.

My surprises are as follows:

1. No nomiations for Zodiac: I thought Fincher would pull out a best director at the very least. Hopefully, there were at least a few nods in the technical categories.

2. No nominations for Waitress: I think that this film was the Juno of the first half of the year. How quickly we forget.

3. No songs from Hairspray: This would not seem so bad if Enchanted did not receive three. WTF? There were several good musicals this year, let's spread the love.

4. Only one song from Once: This would not seem so bad if Enchanted did not receive three. WTF? There were several good musicals this year, let's spread the love.

5. No Score Nomination for There Will Be Blood: Even my girlfriend leaned over and mentioned that she loved the score and she rarely breaks a film down in to it's components and mentions them. I realize that this score was a bit jarring to some, but great art usually is.

6. No Documentary nod for King of Kong: The buzz around this doc. was huge for a documentary and easily the most talked about documentary besides Sicko this year.
