Mamma Mia is a remake!

I'm sure this new movie is a remake. I remember seen a movie when I was a kid that had a similar story and happened in italy. Telly Savalas and probably Sophia Loren played in it. Could you please help me to find the name? I'm unable to find it and it's driving me crazy. (no ABBA music or reference in the original of course but I remember the woman was pregnant and didn't know who the father was among the 3 males)

Sam,
I'm sure you're thinking of Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968).
BTW, Sophia was played by Gina Lollobrigida.

Mamma Mia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia!

Henry is completely right. Although it's not really the new movie that's a remake.. it's an adaption of the musical which in itself is a remake.

Re: Mamma Mia is a remake!

David beat me to it.

The important thing about Momma Mia! is not so much that it borrowed the plot of a film, but that it's the prototype of the "jukebox" musical, i.e., a musical that's created to an existing song catalogue. MM was a huge success and is still playing on Broadway almost seven years after opening.

Most jukebox musicals that followed it haven't done so well, the most notable exception being Jersey Boys, which tells the story of The Four Seasons and will no doubt be a film someday. I say "most notable", because Jersey Boys scored with both audiences and critics, whereas Mamma Mia! had to settle for making tons of money. (Don't cry for me, Scandinavia.)

Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968)

Thanks a lot. I was looking for this. I have to see it again. It will bring back some memories!

And who plays Terence Hill in it?! I'm sure Terence Hill was also in it!

I daresay We Will Rock You has been quite successful, and that was created around the Queen catalogue.

I did say "most". Movin' Out was also quite successful.

But neither of those are in Momma Mia! territory. We Will Rock You did not achieve major success in a key market where Momma Mia! triumphed: the U.S. It played for about a year in Vegas and never played New York.
