Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening
I was just thinking M needed to be humbled a few times. He'd be better for it. Last thing I want to do is totally slam the guy. I own a small stack of his films and I've warmed up to several that I didn't like at first. I'd like M to be another Terry Gilliam, although more level-headed about his projects than Gilliam is. Imagine M going through the Man of La Muncha experience. Hell, I like all of Gilliam's failures, Grimm and so on. But like Gilliam, I've had to warm up over time to M's works. The difference here is I have zero problem giving Gilliam a lot of extra effort because of the kind of person I know Gilliam is. If I was a filmmaker I'd certainly be as like Gilliam as my ability would allow. Not my aim, it would just be. I'd probably come off more like the other Terry, Terry Jones. Crazy enough to enjoy the failures and successes.
Anyway, I see M doing his best movie in the future. I see Gilliam the same way, even with the Brazils and 12 Monkeys on the DVD shelf.

Terry Gilliam? At least M Night doesn't BASH other filmmakers and their movies as Gilliam does constantly. That's worse in my opinion than having an ego about your own film.

So he hands out a punches on the arm... I'd love to get a punch on the arm from Gilliam. Imagine that!
I've heard him slam the Harry Potter movie he might've directed. I don't agree with him on the Columbus version, I quite liked it. BUt I do agree that he was the one to direct it. What else has he bashed?

I'll try to find the article itself but a few years ago he bashed both Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds saying that how terrible he thought it was and especially compared to Close Encounters and then went on to bash Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory saying everything was how he would've done it until they enter the chocolate factory and meet Willy Wonka where everything becomes terrible.. yet then goes on to praise Johnny Depp's performance which negates kind of what he just bashed about the film. It wouldn't have been so bad if he wasn't just coming off of The Brothers Grimm. It's kind of like, who are YOU to bash these filmmakers and say that they've lost it when the exact same could be said for your work in recent years.

How do you know, and who are you to say? His particular personality might not be the type to react well to that; Lady in the Water does not seem to be the work of someone who took the disappointment people expressed toward The Village to heart and went forward with a new humility. If he makes a good movie and it bombs, he might be more likely to make more bitter films with barely contained caricatures of his critics.
Besides, it's not just him. His failures tell Hollywood not just that Shamalayan needs to be put in his place, but that audiences don't want smart, meticulously-plotted fantasies with strong character work.

Ah yes, The Green Effect. Perhaps we'll get our first non trick ending from M.

"smart, meticulously-plotted fantasies with strong character work"
Really? Lady in the water, in my opinion, wasn't particularly smart, and the charecter work wasn't very good, because I didn't care about any of them, but it was definately meticulously plotted, that's for sure. If by that you mean slow as all hell.
But, different people view movies in a different way. I loved his first two movies, but after that, not so much. Hopefully this will be good, because he has shown in the past that he can get me involved in a movie. I'm gonna check it out anyway.

Re: M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening
Eh, I wouldn't judge him by his worst movie. By and large, he has made smart, well-plotted films.

Honestly, I don't think he's really done a trick ending since Unbreakable.
