DISASTER MOVIE looks like it is literally living up to its name.

Good. Maybe it will convince the studios to stop letting Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer (the two worst writers from Scary Movie 2) from tanishing what David Zucker and co. had polished into a really solid brand. I think the failure of Superhero Movie by the superior Zucker team can be directly attributed to the damage wrought by Friedberg and Seltzer via Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans. Finally, their own lazy output comes back to hurt them.

I saw it today somewhat under duress, so I wasn't in the best frame of mind for comedy, and there were sound issues at the theater which also didn't help (though I think the film was better with the sound off), but I thought it was pretty bad.

I think the only time I laughed a little was the scene that riffed on The Chimpmunks. It was also moderately amusing to play "spy Ike Barinholtz" (from MAD-TV) as he played about half the characters in the film.

But, yes, the studios need to stop bankrolling films for these two writers. I thought Date Movie was kind of funny, but the rest have been atrocious.

They already did that. It's called Meet the Spartans.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office

Weekend Estimates

#1 "Bangkok Dangerous" $7.8 million
#2 "Tropic Thunder" $7.5 million ($96.8 million) -35%
#3 "The House Bunny" $5.9 million ($37.0 million) -29%
#4 "The Dark Knight" $5.7 million ($512.2 million) -34%
#5 "Traitor" $4.7 million ($17.7 million) -41%
#6 "Babylon A.D." $4.0 million ($17.2 million) -58%
#7 "Death Race" $3.6 million ($29.8 million) -43%
#8 "Disaster Movie" $3.3 million ($10.9 million) -44%
#9 "Mamma Mia!" $2.7 million ($136.3 million) -36%
#10 "Pineapple Express" $2.4 million ($84.2 million) -32%
#11 "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" $2.2 million ($16.1 million) -22%
#12 "Mirrors" $1.8 million ($27.8 million) -34%

The top 12 tallied only $51.6 million, making this one of the lowest grossing post-Labor Day weekend marks in history. The least said about this weekend the better. The studios are really hoping this isn't the start of post-summer slump.

The release schedule for September and October is really weak ... I'm not sure why the suits would think there wouldn't be a slump forthcoming.

I think Eagle Eye will do good business later this month. But everything else looks pretty bad.
