Re: 2008 at the Box Office
Wednesday Estimates
#1 "Tropic Thunder" $6.2 million
#2 "The Dark Knight" $3.0 million ($451.9 million)
#3 "The Pineapple Express" $2.4 million ($50.8 million)
#4 "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" $1.54 million ($24.8 million)
#5 "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" $1.52 million ($76.5 million)
#6 "Mama Mia!" 1.4 million ($108.5 million)
#7 "Step Brothers" $1.0 million ($85.0 million)
#8 "Journey to the Center of the Earth" $690K ($84.0 million)
#9 "Wall-E" $490K ($211.8 million)
#10 "Swing Vote" $355K ($13.2 million)
DreamWorks and Paramount are a little concerned that "Tropic Thunder" didn't get off to a stronger start (opening with half of what 'Pineapple' did last Wednesday) and are hopeful that the movie will gain strength throughout the remainder of its five-day opening march.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office
Terry,
Is TDK gonna somehow win the weekend again? These Wednesday openers are just giving TDK exactly the run it needs to keep momentum going. With only 6M on Wednesday, Tropic Thunder isn't heading into the weekend with much steam like Pineapple did. How is Clone Wars tracking now?
Cheers,
Jason

Re: 2008 at the Box Office
TDK could win the weekend if the Wednesday mark for "Tropic Thunder" ends up being its biggest day in theaters (ala "The Pineapple Express"), but even still it could squeak by with a win. It also depends on how strong 'Clone Wars' opens, which is currently tracking at having an opening weekend in the area of $15-$20 million. If "Tropic Thunder" loses steam and TDK falls off by less than 40%, than the race for #1 is going to be very close this weekend.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office
I still think Tropic Thunder will be bigger than TDK this weekend. It's got star power, a lot of positive reviews, and the "buzz" that's created by controversy. If TDK wins the box office again this weekend I will be absolutely shocked and amazed.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office
Keep in mind, guys, I'm certainly not expecting TDK to win the weekend. But I was curious if it was even in the running.
Heck, even good ole' Chuck is possibly heading into his third screening! Chuck, you could be the determining factor of whether or not TDK is number one for 5 weeks in a row! What pressure! Even Phelps doesn't have that kind of pressure this weekend.
Cheers,
Jason

Re: 2008 at the Box Office
I wouldn't be surprised if TDK pulls a miracle for a 5th crown, not suggesting that it will. We have PE & TT (2 comedies for a catfight) plus CW.
My pick is TT.

TDK continues to bleed off at a 40% (or less) drop-off on a daily basis, which is very good considering it's been out for 4 weeks now. Most blockbusters bleed out at a 50% or greater clip.
|
So at that rate of decline what would the final domestic take be estimated at? 530 million?

Re: 2008 at the Box Office
Jason,
Oh, I'd rather Tropic Thunder did very well It's a great comedy.
But every time I think maybe TDK wasn't as awesome as I initially thought, I remember a scene or a moment that makes me realize...it was that awesome, and I should see it on IMAX again!

It'll shed theaters in the coming weeks, so I'm going to say it'll top out around $510 million to $520 million after about 10-12 weeks total.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office
Quantum of Solace might beat The Dark Knight now that Warner Bros dropped Harry Potter off its fall schedule. There's literally nothing else coming out. This winter officially blows.

Re: 2008 at the Box Office
I think QoS will be big(certainly bigger than Casino Royale), but I don't think there's any way it will come close to TDK numbers. In fact, I'd be shocked if it hit the $300m mark. Bond flicks just don't do gigantic box office.
