I think on opening day, The Mummy Returns had a 12% RT rating. This is a "critic-proof" movie, at least for the opening weekend. The commercials and previews will either sell it or they won't; people will or will not go based on whether they say "it looks like fun," not because it currently has a 0% RT rating.
The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all. But maybe he's still out there, somewhere. Maybe some day, when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see him again.

To an extent, but I believe Titanic is a bit of an extreme case.
Don't get me wrong I think the movie was a very good film and would've done good business via word of mouth, but I think the Christmas release period + the teen girl craze that was coming to a boil at that exact time elevated it from a movie that maybe finishes at a monstrous $400 million (more than Forrest Gump) to say $600 million.
That's catching lightning in a bottle.

Hold on a second. I never said I thought it was a good film.
Seriously, what you're saying is exactly what I mean. Titanic was the right movie at the right time - in that it came at a time when those teenage girls needed product. Titanic delivered the goods to them and to a vast demographic. It had something for everyone. It was released at a time when the competition was less then what we see today. It was a very well made film (despite some shoddy dialogue and acting). It was a spectacle that had to be seen on the big screen. It included outcast demographics - teen girls/40+ year olds. It was a phenomenon across the board.
Cheers,
Jason

The Mummy is 53% of RT and Returns is 47% so I dunno about that.
I actually liked the first Mummy film but the second one was really meh.

RT didn't have all the reviews in on opening day...I'm just saying that I think I remember seeing it at 12% or some really low number at one point.

To go from 12% to 43% means it must've gone on a huge tear of terrific reviews after its release which is pretty unlikely though.
Even the "cream of the crop" reviews which are usually all done the week of release have the The Mummy Returns at 44%.

That's because it was a big, steaming pile of poo. Seriously, The Mummy Returns is one of the worst "popcorn" films I've suffered through in a long time. The only one I can think of that was as bad, if not worse was Van Helsing. Coincidentally, they were directed by the same guy(Steven Sommers).

Right now, Mummy 3 is at 0% with 7 reviews...none of them from print publications. Someone has got to think this piece of crap is good.

I'll agree with you on Van Helsing, but I thought The Mummy Returns was a fun movie. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
