Re: *** Official BEE MOVIE Review Thread
Despite the horrid teaser trailer for Bee Movie, the normal previews grew on me, and then the local paper gave it a 10. Moreover, everything else was all Sturm und Drang: American Gangster, Michael Clayton, We Own the Night, etc. I wanted something fun and light. Animation was a bonus. My wife was not enthused, but came along reluctantly.
I wanted to have a good time and enjoy the film, and so I did. But objectively, Bee Movie is probably a 6 or 7 of 10. The animation is middling; the people are nothing compared to The Incredibles. The story gets bogged down in a silly lawsuit affair. And the voice acting is competent at best, but at time amateurish -- particularly Patrick Wharburton's character, a one-note character hoarsely shouted for maximum impact.
Still, I had fun. It was fluffy and light and had laughs. And there's nothing else out light-hearted currently.
My wife disliked the whole affair. The people-are-evil theme has long grown tiresome to her. The suspension of disbelief was not at maintained -- it's a Bee Law to not speak to humans but when violated, all humans take it in stride. And likening bee-keeping to slavery was just stupid thematically, distasteful even, for her.
