Re: Shrek 3 is coming!

I saw Shrek the Third tonight with my wife. We both enjoyed it; it was an enjoyable movie and certainly would have been better had I seen it with a full crowd rather than a matinee.

That said, it's not nearly as strong as the second. It's a solid story, with some fantastic moments. But it lacks the great energy and creativity of the second.

Re: Shrek 3 is coming!

It didn't suck as much as I had braced myself for, and found myself laughing at most of the silly bits, though the plot is pretty simple and straight forward without too many twists and surprises. Donkey and Puss-n-Boots both slay me, so it good to see them doing their thang. Shrek and Fiona's story is probably played out by now, but if the box office numbers are good, there's probably one more sequel in the franchise, but it needs a stronger vision in story and direction.

I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-.

Re: Shrek 3 is coming!

Saw it with my family and or friends and the only ones that stayed up was my son, my friend's two kids and myself. Doesn't mean it boring it was a trying day after a funeral in Buffalo hence we wanted to get out from the mourning I guess. Anyway I thought it was actually better than the second one. What I've noticed more about this film is how spectacular the animation really is. Expressions were so lifelike it was scary. Leaps and bounds from some of the prior animated movies, just well done I thought. The gags were really funny and fun time we had that stayed awake.

Re: Shrek 3 is coming!

I saw this a couple of days ago. Parts I liked and other parts fell flat. I like that the film returned, more or less, to the premise of the first one. That premise being the skewed take on popular fairy tale and fantasy characters. I thought it was definitely better than the second one which was marred by an overdose of topical humour based on Hollywood navel gazing. Thankfully, the references to Hollywood and its celebrities were minimized or non-existant.

I thought the film relied a little too much on slapstick humour and some of the characterizations took turns that had no logical build up. The Cinderella, Snow White. and Sleeping Beauty characters were prime examples of characters whose personalities took a wild turn without any anticipatory build-up.

I also thought that some of the music used in the film was badly chosen. I thought the use of "Live and Let Die" was just an atrocious choice for the scene where it was used. For me, it just did not fit the scene at all. I was left wondering what the hell they were thinking when they chose that piece of music.

For me, I would put this film firmly ahead of Shrek 2, but way behind Shrek 1.
