Music and Lyrics - quick review

I found Hugh Grant very amusing in this film, and Drew Barrymore reprises a cute, but somewhat neurotic and emotionally wounded character, and they are good together, though the chemistry isn't quite on the level of former Sandler/Barrymore pairings.

While it's predictable, the performances overcomes its script, and provides a pleasant movie-going experience, especially if you enjoy Grant and Barrymore.

I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-.

Neither reinvent themselves, and there are some forced cheesy moments (what romantic comedy doesn't).

What made the film work for me was Grant's delivery of his lines. He's got excellent comedic timing. Also:
Spoiler:
The direct digs at Wham! and Britney were hilarious.

If you're going to see this film, chances are you are a fan of one of the principles and also of romantic comedies. If that is the case, I think you'll like it. A pretty good romantic comedy: B-.

If you lived through the eighties (especially if you're between 30-40 years old and so were "plugged in" to pop culture in that decade) you might want to up the grade to a B/B+. I did, and found it to be a lot funnier perhaps than others not in that demographic.

I defy anyone to see this and NOT have "Pop Goes My Heart" run through their heads for days afterwards.

Saw it, liked it - definitely more engaging and clever than the average chick flick. Kinda fell apart in the third act, but still an entertaining movie...

I cracked up when I realized that Colin (Alex's more successful partner, a la inspired by George Michael) was played by Scott Porter, who is on "Friday Night Lights" (the TV show), and plays a wheelchair-bound former football player still in high school, and to see him dance around in the music videos was just weird to me.

I can still make my girlfriend laugh out loud by doing the chorus and coupling it with a hip-flick. Impressed that Hugh sang a lot of the songs.

And I agree with your review (in case it wasn't obvious before).

There you go and started it running through my head again! Indeed, it's a catchy one! (Much more than the rather lame song they write together.)

Actually, I think both are quite catchy - they've been battling in my head since yesterday!

Me too! In fact, when I first saw him lip-synching the Pop songs, I thought that they used a different vocalists - and one who didn't match Hugh's natural voice very well. Imagine my embarrassment when I realized he WAS that singer!

This sure was a lot of fun. Hugh Grant is becoming one of those guys where he is always entertaining in a movie, and this one sets him loose even more than usual. Kristen Johnston was also over the top fun.

Re: Music and Lyrics - quick review

It's sort of definitely only a B- type of movie, I think, but it's cute for what it is, evne though I thought some of it could have easily been cut out.

The worthwhile parts are definitely Hugh Grant who is pretty fabulous throughout, and the video for the faux Wham! Pop Goes My Heart song. I though t Drew was rather exceptionally weak in this, but that was, I think, because her character is sort of weak, and has rather pointless neuroses that I found irritating (the Sally Micheals omg he ruined my life freak out was lame, IMO.)
