He would find a way to overact even that.

More interesting news and rumours and speculation based on rumours that Paramount and Abrams wants a name actor for the Fleet Captain and Villian roles. This would help with attracting a broader audience and balance out the main characters as they are played by relative unknowns. This is based on a rumour that they mentioned a name like Russell Crowe in the role of the Villian. Though they know he's not likely to be available, it speaks to support that theory. Here is some casting news:
Yelchin sets course for 'Trek'
By Tatiana Siegel
Aug 8, 2007
J.J. Abrams is putting together his bridge crew for Paramount Pictures' 11th film in the "Star Trek" franchise. Russian-born Anton Yelchin is in negotiations to play Pavel Chekov, the Russian-born navigator of the USS Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk.
Yelchin will join Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play the role of Mr. Spock. Casting is under way in New York and London for Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film's villain and the Federation captain. Abrams, who will helm the untitled film, is expected to sign bigger-name actors for the latter two parts.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the story line is believed to chronicle the early days of the Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy.
Chekov was played by Walter Koenig on the original "Star Trek" TV series, and he is a key member of the Enterprise crew.
Abrams is producing the tentpole through his Paramount-based Bad Robot shingle. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci penned the screenplay and will executive produce along with Bryan Burk and Damon Lindelof. The film is scheduled to bow on Christmas Day 2008.
Yelchin, whose recent credits include "Alpha Dog," next appears in "Charlie Bartlett" and "Finding t.A.T.u." He is repped by CAA.

I can sorta understand knocking Cruise for his off screen antics, but he is an excellent actor. Oscar moms for Born On The Fourth Of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and plenty of other great performances. What has he "overacted" in?
Give the guy a break already. He will win an Oscar one day. You'll see.

Perhaps he would IF an Academy Award were actually about acting. Since it's more about public perception he doesn't have a chance in hell.

I agree with the films you mentioned, esp. Born on the 4th of July, for which he should have won. But my problem with Tom Cruise is not his off-screen behavior (although his appearance on the Today show in '05 was awful). He seems to me to be an ego manic on screen. Does his contract mandate that a large percentage of the film be close-ups of him? Because that's sure as hell what it seems like. And I do think he has a tendency to overact, see any of his films after and including Days of Thunder or Top Gun (excepting the ones above), and you will see someone commanding the audience to notice that he! is! the! star! Add to that that his name is often larger than the title on film posters, and you can see why I tired of the on-screen Tom Cruise very quickly. Part of acting is humility and the man shows none in most of his performances.
Back to Star Trek, if Chekov is being cast, maybe we will see what he was doing before he was assigned to the bridge! Taking out the garbage in engineering, perhaps?

Even better! We'll finally get that scene where he bumps into Khan coming out of the bathroom!

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
It better be just a rumour that Tom Cruise is going to be in this. I have over 260 DVDs (mostly sci-fi and action/adventure) and yet I own none with him in it.
I have all the Star Trek movies, and would feel torn between completing the star trek set or sticking to my convictions.

Ya know, if JJ wants to have Cruise cameo as Pike and Cruise wants to do it, why not? It won't turn the credits into "Tom Cruise in a JJ Abrams production of Star Trek starring Tom Cruise".

Perhaps the Enterprise will find an alien mascarading as Xenu in the center of the galaxy in this new movie?
