Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)

I am getting confused. I thought this new movie is taking place before Kirk and Spock are on the Enterprise. So why would Kirk's death in Generations prevent this from making sense? Isn't "Generations" many years after this new movie is taking place?

Or am I not remembering something about "Generations"? (could be, I haven't seen it in a long time)

Apparently, there's going to be a framing sequence featuring Nimoy as a Next Generation-era Spock, but the character of Kirk wouldn't be available in that timeframe because of Generations.

The bulk of the movie will, I believe, take place during the crew's first mission together, from what I gather - giving Trek the Batman Begins/Casino Royale treatment.

Based on Nimoy's comments at TrekMovie in several articles over there, his role is vital to the story and is more than just a cameo so bookends only are unlikely.

JJ Abrams and Nimoy both went out of their way to say this movie does not violate continuity.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)

These are certainly exciting times for Star Trek. The recent news is certainly encouraging.

To address Mikel's comment, I think the one thing JJ Abrams is doing that will really help this movie is by having the story be Spock-centric, as has been reported. By having Nimoy in the film as Spock, it adds credence to the new actor, Quinto and to the others. Bond never did that, or Superman, etc. Spock's appearance his been debunked as a bookends type of appearance as has been speculated. He appears to play a role in the story and that's about all we know.

The addition of Shatner as Kirk would certainly sweeten the deal. JJAbrams may be being diplomatic in his comment to want to have the Shat, there's likely very little chance they can work him into the screenplay in a meaningful way that's appropriate for the story. We all wish for it of course!

Agreed Nelson. Us old TOS fans are going to get at least another kick at the can. I personally have not been this excited about Star Trek in ages.

A Spock-centric story! Yee-haw!

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)

Honestly I just don't "get" the direction of this film. Maybe it'll be more clear after I see the trailer. Is it grittier? More action? More character driven? More humorous? More romance? More serious? More retro-60s-ish?

How much are they going to change to make it appeal to the "mass" audience? I just have a lot of questions. Bringing back Nimoy at least gives them a bit of a safety net, and rebooting back the original iconic character types probably cuts through some of the "this is Star Trek part 15, right?" confusion.

If they're going to add Nimoy, IMO, unless the script really doesn't permit it, they go ahead and bring back Shatner. It's obvious he wants to be in it. Everyone purged Generations from their memory anyway Though I suppose if they're talking about TNG-era Spock then Kirk and the rest of the original Enterprise crew would be dead along that timeline anyway.

At the risk of bringing back the much-hated plot device of the Nexus, that would allow Kirk to enter the TNG timeline, somewhat plausibly.

It would be nice to see Patrick Stewart in a cameo as well (since some of this will be in TNG-time), although I doubt that is in the cards.

Well, to be fair, we don't know anything about this film besides (1) Abrams directing, (2) Kurtzman & Orci writing, (3) Quinto & Nimoy as Spock. There's nothing really to "get" yet.

Still, I'd be shocked if Paramount and company aren't looking at Batman Begins and Casino Royale as their models: Go back to the beginning, tell a story that establishes the characters, emphasize the things that people love about the franchise, jettison the things that make for easy parody.

Also, to build on what Jason posted, the thinking from what I have gathered is that the "franchise" has gotten pretty bloated in the past decade with all the spin-off shows. I think it resulted in the public taking it for granted because it was on all the time.

The core things that made Trek what it is got quite diluted. (adventure, the core friendship of Kirk, Spock and McCoy, optimissim for the future of mankind, etc.) This film is getting back to basics, where Trek was at it's purist.

And it's speculation that if Nimoy/Spock is in this film, it must take place in the TNG era or that his participation is for bookending the film. None of these things are fact. All we know is that Nimoy/Spock plays a part of the plot.

A lot of fans want this film to undo Generations and bring back Kirk, I sure would! But that is wishful thinking, Abrams and the writers are doing what is right for a great film
