Yes he had served with Pike for several years before Kirk graduated.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008
I'd be willing to bet that before it's all over, Shatner will be joining Nimoy on the set. Shatner's a master at playing the attention game. That he's "not in it" as of now probably means they haven't worked out the details. I still think we see Shatner and Nimoy together in a framing sequence (and maybe undo the awful ending of Generations!).

Anywy you look at it, Starfleet Academy or prequel to TOS is still just a bad idea.
I think JJ's sucess is going to his head if he feels he can pull this off.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008
As I said on another forum, I wouldn't be surprised if this film took place in two time periods.
We know Nimoy is providing some kind of book end to the picture. So perhaps in the future (sometime after Next Gen, so I guess that is 24th century?), a dying Spock is passing on his knowledge and wisdom to his offspring (son or daughter) before he passes away peacefully. He passes on this collected knowledge via mind meld, just like the dying Sarek did to Picard in Sarek's last episode on Star Trek the Next Generation (Sarek would have passed it on to Spock but Spock was away on Romulus).
Spock's offspring experiences the story of young Kirk and young Spock, and that may be the bulk of the motion picture. But a clever writer could have the 24th century person (Spock's son or daughter) take some kind of active role in completing something from the past.
And a bonus is that whichever era gets better audience reception can be the era for the sequel.
I'm sure other fans have suggested this same scenario, or variations of it.

The question is, how are they going to use this type of storyline to spring a new TV series or Movie franchise? I think it would be easier to see the adventures of Pike or someone else.

I tend to think it may be Spock visiting Kirk's gravesite, or his memorial on Earth, and remembering the story.
I am still hopeful that Shatner will be in the movie with Nimoy and that it will somehow resolve the end of Kirk from Generations and make it a more satisfying conclusion to one of the genre's greatest characters.
I happen to think that great characters like Kirk and Spock should not die on screen. Their deaths should remain a mystery to viewers and in that way they retain a sense of immortality. Kirk's death (falling off a bridge, essentially) was all too common for someone of his stature.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008
Personally I think ST 11 is going to be a riff on The Cage/Menagerie. Spock disobeys Star Fleet again and goes to Talus IV to use the Guardian to try and save Kirk from his fate in Generations. Something inadvertent happens and a new timeline is created which sidesteps the continuity issue.

I don't think there will be even any such attempt to explain away any continuity issues. As a matter of fact, if given the choice of them either A) just ignoring any continuity issues and starting the story as they see fit or B) finding some ultimately silly fan fiction-worthy plot device by which to devise some alternate timeline to explain any continuity lapses, I'd much rather them go with A.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008
If option B is not the path - and prejudging it as fan silly without seeing how they would accomplish it is unfair - why bring Nimoy (or Shatner) into the project at all? Their presence makes the transition to the new cast all the more jarring.

Point for the geeks: the Guardian is from "The City on the Edge of Forever"; I don't belive the planet was ever mentioned. Talos IV was the name of the planet from "The Cage" which as inhabited by the Talosians...Spock stole the Enterprise in "The Menagerie" to bring Captain Pike to his planet.
Anyway, I like bringing in the Trek history to rewrite it for all intents and purposes. I just wonder if it would be too "insider-y" for the general masses. Trek XI has to be accessible enough for the non-fans but have enough references for the geeks (like me).
