Interesting and entertaining video interview with Simon Pegg. Watch for the preview clip in the elevator - hilarious.
The clip touches on a variety of topics including Nimoy on set and meeting Spielberg.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
At the risk of going somewhat off track, I'm going to help spread a sort of amusing meme I came across this morning on the old Web.
At a site called "The Linux and Unix menagerie", in a column (or "(Web)blog") entitled "The Mother Of All Urban Legend Chain Emails And A Little Something For Star Trek Fans " (dateline: Sunday, September 28, 2008), a Mike Tremell disseminates a chain-mail joke of "a list of things you'll never ever see on Star Trek".
He goes on to say:
Quote:
It covers all the way up to "The Next Generation," but I don't officially recognize any show except the original. The "James T. Kirk" Star Trek is the only Star Trek there ever was for many, many reasons. They had no budget, which made for spectacular cardboard "name-your-props", the characters were pretty much all offensive stereo-types (the sleazy womanizing Lothario, the bitter old geezer, the sterile logician, the token black character, token Asian character, token Hispanic character and the fighting mad drunken Scotsman who somehow managed to keep that sh@@box U.S.S. Enterprise moving along even though he had no clue how to cap a pressure valve) and - if you were in the right "frame of mind" - it was one of the most hilarious and entertaining hours of television you could ever watch. To this day, it's still my favorite (so much so that I've refused to watch any of the others .

(Note the ahistorical comments on the production of the show and on the characters.)
Anyway, here they are
Quote:
Things That Will Never Happen on Star Trek
Author Unkown
1. The Enterprise runs into a mysterious energy field of a type it has encountered several times before.
2. The Enterprise goes to visit a remote outpost of scientists, who are all perfectly all right.
3. Some of the crew visit the holodeck, and it works properly.
4. The crew of the Enterprise discover a totally new life form, which later turns out to be a rather well-known old life form wearing a funny hat.
5. The crew of the Enterprise are struck by a mysterious plague, for which the only cure can be found in the well-stocked Enterprise sick-bay.
6. The Captain has to make a difficult decision about a less advanced people which is made a great deal easier by the Starfleet Prime Directive.
7. The Enterprise successfully ferries an alien VIP from one place to another without serious incident.
8. An enigmatic being composed of pure energy attempts to interface to the Enterprise's computer, only to find out that it has forgotten to bring the right leads.
9. A power surge on the Bridge is rapidly and correctly diagnosed as a faulty capacitor by the highly-trained and competent engineering staff.
10. The Enterprise is captured by a vastly superior alien intelligence which does not put them on trial.
11. The Enterprise is captured by a vastly inferior alien intelligence which they easily pacify by offering it some sweeties.
12. The Enterprise visits an earth-type planet called "Paradise" where everyone is happy all of the time. However, everything is soon revealed to be exactly what it seems.
13. A major Starfleet emergency breaks out near the Enterprise, but fortunately some other ships in the area are able to deal with it to everyone's satisfaction.
14. The Enterprise is involved in a bizarre time-warp experience which is in some way unconnected with the late 20th Century.
15. Kirk (or Riker) falls in love with a woman on a planet he visits, and isn't tragically separated from her at the end of the episode.
16. Counselor Troi states something other than the blindingly obvious.
17. The warp engines start playing up a bit, but seem to sort themselves out after a while without any intervention from boy genius Wesley Crusher.
18. Wesley Crusher gets beaten up by his classmates for being a smarmy git, and consequently has a go at making some friends of his own age for a change.
19. Spock (or Data) is fired from his high-ranking position for not being able to understand the most basic nuances of about one in three sentences that anyone says to him.

Some of these plot points won't apply of course, but, of those that do, which, if any, will find their way into the upcoming film, you think?

Tough to say Rex but as Spock said, 'There are always possibilities.'
[Deadpan mode = on]I hope none myself. Would make for boring watching if they included some of those.[Deadpan mode = off]

Gee, Lou, see, the idea was for everyone to chime in with his own plot-clichés for story turns which "won't happen" (but, probably will) in the forthcoming movie. Such as:
Quote:
Five "redshirts" accompany Kirk and Spock into the danger zone. All come back alive and in one piece.
Bones to Kirk: "He's NOT dead, Jim!"

Hey Rex- A request, when you've composed your posts with the text in light colors, it's hard to read, especially yellow and cyan. Can you use darker colors?
You mean time travel plot where they go back and don't alter the future?

Wired interview with Orci and Kurtzman. Interesting comments from both of them and some pretty cool pictures of their office too.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
I saw that story Lou, thanks! You get a sense of what they liked about Star Trek. Especially Kurtzman, who I had not heard from as much, or at all.
If Kurtzman got into Star Trek through Star Trek 2-The Roth of Khan (Shatner pronunciation) , that's a good introduction. But I hope he got more from TOS too! I am assuming that Orci is fully playing the role to check and balance along with Damon Lindelof. Just had a thought, if Star Trek 2 was about facing mortality, then I can see how they wanted to go Star Trek Zero, when these young guys were facing the new and unknown starting out in their careers. That has a certain symmetry.
The submarine battle remark certainly refers to Balance of Terror. And the Star Wars reference that they want to bring some of that into Star Trek will be provocative. These remarks, for me, says they will have some kind of battle sequence. I think Orci said himself JJ Abrams was the only guy they felt who could bring that from the page to the screen as they wrote it.
That in itself is okay, and like Nemesis and First Contact, all seem to measure themselves to Wrath of Khan. And we've heard Berman say that before.
But I am hoping they go deep into what makes the Star Trek universe tick in that Roddenberry way. The best Trek's were not about space battles, as we all know here.
I hope the Star Wars reference was about what Orci eluded to, the sense of being in space and speed, as being that epic sense. That it's a pretty big frontier out there with lots of worlds far away.
Sorry if I've sounded less then overly enthusiastic. I think this movie is being made with an untested team in a Star Trek production. I really hope they make a fantastic movie and one that a Star Trek fan would love that crosses over too. And I've said before Nimoy's participation is a good sign.
