Nelson,

I too would have loved to have recorded the Mike Douglas and Hugh Downs segments. Those would be a lot of fun to watch today.

You bring up a point that I've often thought of over the years while watching TOS. Kirk (or rather, Shatner) pronounces many names in the show quite differently than how others might say them. Just to name a few, 'Balok,' 'Landru,' 'Mr. Sandoval,' and Cowell (for Kyle). There are many, many others I have heard over the years, but can't recall at the moment. I've thought of making a list of them every now and then. But then I asked myself, why?

Oh yeah Scott, I noticed that too. In This Side of Paradise, Shatner pronounces "sabotage" differently and as you said, there's probably several more examples!

DeForest Kelley mispronounced Jaeger in Squire of Gothos, and Ferrell called Mr. Sulu "Solo" in The Enemy Within but those are different examples of goofs.

How about Merv Griffin YouTube - Merv Griffin w/Shatner, Nimoy, & Kelley on Star Trek II pt 1

Thanks for finding those clips from youtube Norm! My recollection was incorrect, I thought it was The Mike Douglas Show, but that's the one! It's missing the bit where Shatner talks about why he pronounces Wrath of Khan as Roth. (I misspelled Roth earlier!)

PS: never mind, looks like he says it in Pt 2.

Nelson,

Isn't it interesting, that some forty years later, we (meaning you, me, and countless other Trek fans) know how something is supposed to be pronounced in a television script? I wonder how many shows get dissected to this degree. Fascinating.

Trek probably has the best known group of fans, but I bet there's smaller groups of fans who are just the same for other shows!

By the way, that youtube link above that Norm posted also has other Star Trek links. What I never saw before was that interview with Shatner in 1969 on the Mike Douglas Show. Done right after the series wrapped as he was promoting his album, The Transformed Man. Kinda cool to hear him talk so enthusiastically about Star Trek. It was almost as if he didn't know yet it was over. But I suspect he knew.

Nelson,

Sometimes, it is gratifying and enjoyable to read and hear what 'stars' say about a particular work before they were deemed stars. I wish I had seen this interview.

On somewhat of a tangental note, I love the work of Jack Nicholson in Easy Rider. Why? Probably because he (like Shatner in Trek) isn't really aware at that time of how important he will become. I think that that is an attractive trait in an actor and/or entertainer/performer (IMO).

I remember getting to stay up late to watch The Tomorrow show, with Tom Snyder . He had TOS cast members, and Harlan Ellison. I was only about 10 or 11, so it was a big deal for me to stay up til 1 AM, on a school night!

Thanks mom and dad.

Rick - I saw clips for that show on YouTube. It was funny to hear Kelley and Koenig say they were getting tired of talking about Trek way back then. If they only knew what lay ahead for all of them.

Of course, Ellison stole the show decrying the masses following the themes of Star Trek but remaining ignorant of true art. James Doohan bravely disagreed with him.

It was a great segment.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)

Apologies to the group that I got the thread off topic to discuss the past interviews out there from the Star Trek 2 era and earlier.

I saw that episode of Tomorrow too, but on youtube a few months ago. 1976 and the first film was almost there, that was fun to see and brought back a lot of memories of that time.

Some last thoughts on this. It was great that Norm posted that link to the Merv Griffin show. What a hoot to see that agan, I had a chance to watch all 4 parts again. I guess the portion with Bibi Besch wasn't uploaded.

And Scott, the 1969 Mike Douglas interview is on youtube. I found it at the link Norm posted that listed related videos. Here's a link to the video itself: YouTube - William Shatner On The Mike Douglas Show 1969 Part 1 Of 2

Part 1 is the interview, part two is him doing his talking song bit. I'd seen it before, and it's not worth the lost time from your life!

Shatner is amazing to see as the guy is full of energy and enthusiasm. Nimoy has said, if it weren't for that aspect of his personality, the character dynamics of the 3 characters would not have gelled as it did. He's going 90 miles an hour in those interviews and other appearances like on game shows. From 1969 to today, the guy doesn't stop. You got to give him credit. He's been knocked around in the 70's and struggled and came back.

It was great to see Kelley again and his down to earth manner. He was such a gentleman. What you see is what he was. He was not the uber "star" type, just the working actor doing his job. And Nimoy was always a class gentleman, thoughtful and intelligent. I wonder if he will be out promoting Star Trek 2009 and doing the talk shows. I would not be surprised if he's not doing too many. But then, he's the biggest name actor in the film. Of course Quinto is a big name too due to Heroes, so perhaps they will make a team doing the circuit.
