Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
This should spur some discussions at some of the Star Trek prop forums!
It will be interesting to see how they designed the communicator and phasers in particular. The communicator is such an iconic design. The later films got away from that with one film trying to do their version with the flip grid. (Oh yeah, Enterprise did the flip grid too!)
My favorite is the original phaser. It's such a clean design and I never felt it deserved some criticism for being a cheap water pistol like design. It got away from the typical ray gun designs of the time.
I recently had the opportunity to hold and examine the real communicator and a midgrade phaser at a private collectors collection. It was a thrill for a prop fan!
For me, the new design of the Enterprise exterior and interior and the new uniforms will be looked at with interest, plus the props too!

Me too Nelson. The phaser type II from the series is still my fav design out of all the Trek iterations. Hated the TNG ones! Looked like handheld dustbusters!
Must have been a blast to hold the original props!
Every man is my superior, in that I may learn from him.

I own a wooden model that we painted ourselves. It's the hand phaser that attaches to the pistol.
BTW, I really like the nice touch of having older phasers in the two pilots as well as some of the earlier episodes of TOS. And I also love the thought put into What Are Little Girls Made Of?, an episode that has these older type phasers on Exo III. Andrea takes one of these off of the top of the shelf before she phasers away Kirk (2). I've always entertained the thought that this phaser was of the older type because Dr. Corby (originally) had been on the planet years before the Enterprise got there. Another episode is The Man Trap. Dr. Crater has one of the older type phasers, and uses it when he shoots at Kirk and Spock. He was on the planet for a few years (five?) before they got there as well. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, or just a fortunate accident, but it's neat how these type of phasers being in the hands of these two planets' inhabitants can to some extent be explained.

Nelson,
I like that one as well. How I'd love to have picked one of those up at the earliest conventions I attended.
